So I have read more than the first two volumes but this review is from after I read those two, before I read any others ...
For context, I only read because my cousin was saying how it's so good and groundbreaking and putting down detective conan ... so I tried to be fair but that's why you'll see there's a lot of comparisons to the genre, detective conan, etc.
I read against my will, I would not voluntarily have started, knowing the plot and I still wouldn't have knowing it now, not something I would have voluntarily gone through 100+ volumes for ...

It seems pretty typical in terms of the genre both in terms of adventure/shonen, and stuff centering on the protagonist being a young criminal (thief/pirate) etc. The plot is just him wanting to be a pirate/looking for the one piece so it makes sense that it can just go on forever.
Pause for Lit Note: Erased and Death Note are the other two anime "shows" (rather than films) I watched (and those were becuase I wanted to watch)
The devil fruit and all that is unique but that’s part of the plot ofc. I definitely don’t think it’s better than detective Conan or even erased or death note,
or how it’s better than other shonen like demon slayer (I want to watch/read). The “good guys” being identified by their “treasure” being something with emotional significance as opposed to the “bad guys” thinking of treasure as solely loot and riches is established and used so much in the plot so far (luffys treasure is his hat, the dogs treasure is that shop, the mayors treasure is his town) that it’s not subtle at all and will probably play a role in the “final treasure” the one piece. Or it’ll have some curse/catch or some supernatural thing. If it just ends up being gold and stuff and then they get it and it ends it would be anticlimactic and like “ok”. The build up is just not subtle at all …
Detective Conan did the treasure thing too. The detective boys, agasa and Conan went to a castle that was supposed to have a treasure - long story short this maid killed the mistress of the house, her daughter and all loyal servants so no one could recognize her, got plastic surgery to look like the mistress, pretended she had dementia and kept searching for the treasure left by the late father of the mistress - it turned out to be the castle and the view from it - and she was like “I killed so many people made myself look like a hag for THIS” they got called to the police department to give their statements later and that’s how the plot continued and built into later case but yeah - I thought I saved a ss of that part but looks like I didn’t.
The “he’s a pirate so he’s bad” thing/trope is used too. Abt perception and “good guys” vs “bad guys”. Hence Nami the "not-a-pirate-steals-from-pirates: doesn’t believe luffy about his hat being his treasure bc it was given to him by shanks, again bc of the association of
treasure = emotional significance - good guys
and
treasure = loot - bad guys
in one piece.
Then there’s zolo. When he actually appeared (not just discussed) in the manga, he was imprisoned as this high level criminal but we find he didn’t actually do anything illegal (until luffy tricked him into becoming a pirate). He plays into this role by refusing the little girls rice balls at first … then we hear her story about him. He made into an evil scary person by legend/rumors/stereotypes etc. but he wasn’t even a bad person in terms of illegal like pirate.
Meanwhile we see the bad “good guys” - that navy captain and his son. The son lied to zolo about him being set free if he survives a week, and was planning to have him executed in a few days.
Lying killing etc - “bad things”.
The navy captain dude used violence and fear to do whatever he wanted bc he made the law.
The way luffy got zolo to join his team in the first place was with “either you let them kill you bc they’re the law or you go against them to save your life and become an outlaw and so a pirate and have to join my crew”.
Pause for Lit Note: Yes at this time I had forgotten his name (you'll see who I mean) I'm sorry ... and yes atm I don't remember it either but let's continue with the review. Sorry boy with glasses
Then there was glasses boy (don’t remember his name) whose Dream was to join the navy and he didn’t want to be a pirate bc “bad” and then he saw that navy captain vs zolo and (who’s good who’s bad? Inner conflict) but then after the captain was defeated he was able to join.
The big tropes are courage, fight for your dreams, friendship, the real treasure is the journey/friends you made along the way/memories etc, found family, “bad guys” aren’t so bad, “good guys” aren’t so good, stereotypes, etc. but it’s not subtle at all.
Pause for Lit Note: My cousin interrupted this review when I was reading it to say there is no "the real treasure is the journey" so I'm sorry ig ...
I stand by everything else so far (BASED ON VOLUMES ONE AND TWO)
Back to glasses boy, when he was introduced he was admiring luffys courage. At the end of volume 1 when he parts ways with luffy and zolo, luffy tricks him into standing up for himself/his dream by goading him into punching him by threatening to tell abt his “past” and hence “proving” he’s “not a pirate”. He will probably be seen again in an “epic” confrontation with luffy much later in the series, but not any time soon, navy vs pirate, lot of foreshadowing to that. Might be team up and drinks or wtv when they met before fight too, but the navy hes in now is prob not corrupt or that whole thing and his dream would be pointless plot wise -
Pause for Lit Note: my cousin said don't predict what happens keep reading ... sigh I'll never be able to stop reading this In case you're curious I told him I wouldn't read volume 3 right away (yes I've read it already by now) because I didn't like it enough to prioritize and I wanted to read Detective Conan and sent him ss of the exciting plot relevant part no they're not here this is a one piece review
Back to nami, she’s also the whole “pirates are bad, so luffys bad, I’d never be a pirate etc” and so she hates luffy and all till she sees him with the dog and apologizes. She also lost someone to pirates tho, prob new character bc only character introduced otherwise that might reappear like that is shanks if he’s like her brother or smth. Or if glasses boy was her friend or brother and was kidnapped by that female pirate. But yeah very much the trope.
Again not new at all, even pirates of the Caribbean had “your father was a good man. And a pirate.” The trope of the bad guys aren’t so bad, “good guys” can be worse isn’t new at all in this genre. It goes back to Robin Hood. The bad guy gang being like family and loyal to the finish (mean to everyone but them) is also typical like this is even in hunter x hunter im pretty sure like it’s typical with shonen. But she’s going to join luffys gang for sure, bc of what she said abt “might consider teaming up”.
Pause for Lit Note: Because he was acting like it was groundbreaking ... note I didn't say it was bad at any point but he was acting like it was super deep or worth 100 volumes or an intricate storyline and whatnot so my review was like this. I thought I was fair and I commented on the story in detail but sorry again
It’s p clear already luffys whole crew is gonna be against stereotype and gonna be someone who is against pirates and doesn’t want to be a pirate -> luffy shows he’s not a “bad guy” -> there’s “actual bad guys” luffy fights, they are tricked or forced into joining, or have to keep a deal/bet wtv
Pirate hunter zolo -> pirate
Steals from pirates nami -> pirate
And then once they join luffys crew they are loyal to the finish.
So for nami herself - I’m interested in her, finding out her backstory, like that’s what I’d look forward to seeing and reading in volume 3.
Pause for Lit Note and you can consider this a minor spoiler ig I was DISAPPOINTED (Nami backstory not in volume 3, it's later but let's get back to volumes 1 & 2)
She’s now in stage “not all pirates are bad”. Next might be stage “there are worse people” if there’s a new villain for the protagonists who isn’t a pirate bc for nami it was just buggy so far. And maybe that would further push her to be like "ok I’ll join", but it’s maybe, maybe not.
Prob luffy + nami open up to each other later, but luffy does it in the matter of fact way like he does. Def platonic I doubt they will become a couple. Besides nami's backstory she would also prob have a “Dream” bc one piece is following the same formula for all relevant “good guys”. “I’ll join as long as I can do this”, like zolo. Also wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out nami didn’t see the person she lost to pirates killed in front of her eyes

For zolos Dream/backstory - mangaka has my respect for this one. Big time. 👏👏👏
The way he actually talked abt it, that girl being the best now but then once puberty hits, boys become much better than girls - and then for sports, especially fighting ones, she’d have no chance beating ALL guys any more.
There’s just that physical strength difference, just facts. And that she wishes she was a boy bc of it.
So so so much respect to him for this.
And then it’s like “one of us will become the best swordsman in the world and if I beat you it won’t be bc ur a girl”. And then she dies. It’s just like BOOM, no transition or build up or anything. Like ok.
But also, it’s kinda fitting that she died, poetic, makes sense.
She died so she didn’t have to be defeated by a boy, she died undefeated by a boy. Till her death she was the best at that place.
But let’s be real. It’s because she never grew up.
So zolo wouldn’t have to face that, yes, after puberty she did have a disadvantage against grown men.
But she never became a woman.
If zolo did beat her it would be “was it because she was a woman?”
And if she won it would be “how actually plausible would that be?”
Becoming a great swordswoman - possible.
Becoming a great swordswoman who can beat most men in swordfighting, still can be possible.
Becoming the best swordsperson in the world beating all men who train the same way as you know the same strategies and are bigger faster and stronger - no it’s not possible.
Pause for Lit Note: Trust me, I know this, I've been a black belt since I was 12, I could break concrete with my bare hands at 12. At some point, I gotta know, yeah, I may be fast, and know how to fight, but if a guy over twice my weight and over a foot taller already gets me, not much I can do ... and it sucks. It really does. There's weight classes in wrestling for a reason just saying. I was stronger than all the boys and girls before puberty ... sad lifeThere will be a thread abt this later bc a lot I'm mad abt being underweight now
At some point there’s a difference between a can do attitude and being delusional.
If he left her alive, the dream (hers) would’ve been impossible, and he was showing it sucks but there is that advantage.
And then zolos promise, what keeps him going:“now I have to become the best for both of us.”
So honorable, so sweet, so noble, not just luffy and glasses boy's dream. So I like zolo and major respect to him for zolo backstory.
Most of it was there’s nothing special storyline wise; it’s def not unoriginal but nothing groundbreaking, masterpiece, etc. Nothing that makes it better than anything else in the genre, but THIS. Zolo backstory. Major respect to him for that. That’s good writing storyline wise for sure. That gets my praise, def my favorite part.
Rest I stand by the storyline being nothing special. Like I said it’s not subtle, it’s typical of the genre trope wise, it’s not deep, or making you think (bc it’s not subtle, again this is besides zolo backstory that is at least 8/10) etc.
Pause for Lit Note: Yes superhero graphic novels are deep ... The whole reason why I like Spider-Man so much is because of his psychology. ... I can pull stuff I wrote about him later but let's not get to off track. No matter what he does, he loses ... Everyone hates him ... his job is based on trashing his image ... so much more I could say but let me get back on track ...
Like compared to the other manga/anime and tv and even western graphic novels - because I read a lot of those - I saw others being more deep, having better writing, etc.
There’s nothing that stands out as a great line or writing or smth iconic - closest thing is wtv luffy said, like being a pirate means being prepared to fight or look at death or smth when nami asked if it meant being prepared to kill someone when she was ordered to kill him. Again big trope is courage here.
Like, for example, great writing actually wording-wise, not just creative storyline, for example, Detective Conan - “a thief is a creative artist, devising brilliant ways to steal his prize … and a detective, following in his footsteps and hunting for faults … is no better than a mere critic.”
Like nothing quite worthy or anything here(One Piece), the writing is nothing special so far.
There’s bad guys, good guys, etc., but the bad guys don’t evoke any emotional reaction in me, nor the good, the injustice, etc, no emotional connection.
There’s nothing that made me think "wow the mangaka is so so smart", or it’s great writing etc, groundbreaking.
Pause for Lit Note: I was put down for starting to watch the Super Mario Super Show again while I was sick with covid because I wanted to finish and see what happened ... I watched as a kid (On Netflix, it came out in 1989 smh, not airing on tv). Hence the mention ... again I read it against my will, I think I was still fair considering ...
I mean it’s fun and interesting enough. I'd read it for the same reason I continue with stuff like Super Mario, like curiosity and I’m a completionist. No desire to binge or anything, and the whole it being 100 plus volumes is more like 🫠 than me wanting to read all the volumes obsessively to find out what happens next, the plot just being pirates I wouldn’t have started on my own or wanted to finish if I hadn’t, But yeah .
This is except zolo backstory - that’s good. Really good.
But it’s fun, I’d read for fun and continue now and then like that. There’s nothing wrong with fun though
He seems to have an interest in what he wrote and the sproingy luffy and stuff are cute so I took ss. I’ll continue tho and give a review to you after every volume😅

I mean it’s fun and interesting enough. I'd read it for the same reason I continue with stuff like Super Mario, like curiosity and I’m a completionist. No desire to binge or anything, and the whole it being 100 plus volumes is more like 🫠 than me wanting to read all the volumes obsessively to find out what happens next, the plot just being pirates I wouldn’t have started on my own or wanted to finish if I hadn’t, But yeah .
This is except zolo backstory - that’s good. Really good.
But it’s fun, I’d read for fun and continue now and then like that. There’s nothing wrong with fun though
He seems to have an interest in what he wrote and the sproingy luffy and stuff are cute so I took ss. I’ll continue tho and give a review to you after every volume😅
