i think what sm said was that she's still under contract. so they could mean it in the same way tiffany seohyun and sooyoung were still "under contract" negotating with sm and ultimately leaving at the end of their contract extention time. honestly sm isn't hurting her and if they can offer her good opportunities she'd definitely prioritize that. also sm's power in the entertainment industry is gross and maybe she is better off staying with them bc of it.
