Hi! I'm MidLight's main vocalist and bright maknae, Esmée!

Explain your debut single. What is it about?
In life, we take a lot of things for granted. We become fixated on the negative and as such big gestures are what we often look for to make us smile and be happy again.
Our debut single, 'Nature's Gift', is about how even the smallest things in life are a gift. The message that we deliver in the song is about the appreciation for what we have, but often fail to see. It's about positivity and the will to see darker moments pass. To understand that even in the darkest of nights, the Stars shine and the Moon lights the way. And how the gloomiest of days is given warmth by the shining Sun. We hope through listening to our song, people will take note of the good things in their life that's far closer than they think and will light their way and give them warmth whenever they need it.

Who are your favourite artists?
I love Dreamcatcher! I'm also a huge fan of (G)I-DLE and Red Velvet.

Explain the trainee process -- how were you picked?
I moved to Seoul when I was 15 and I'm a huge K-pop fan. I was singing a number of K-pop songs and Western songs out in public with a few friends when I was approached by a lovely lady saying she was looking to start a music agency/record label and offered me an audition because she loved my voice. I told my parents and they encouraged me to give it a go.
I sang Taeyeon's 'I' at the audition and I was accepted immediately. I trained for around 3 years. The hardest part was learning dance. Growing up, I'd usually just sing in my room rather than learn choreography but with the help of incredible choreography teachers and even our talented Ava, I'm at a level now that I can be proud of. I'll always work harder to show better sides to my dancing!

If you weren’t an idol, what would you be doing?
I have a passion for writing stories and painting. I'd certainly be writing some fantasy novel if I wasn't an idol, whilst perhaps creating a YouTube channel to showcase my art.

Any talents, or charms?
You could say my singing voice is a talent, right? Perhaps my flexibility? Ha!
Seriously though, I'm proud of my skill in art and writing. My charms... Usually people mention how bright and smiley I am. I enjoy having a laugh so I guess a charm of mine is certainly my bright energy. Keana says my cheeky teasing is a charm too. I don't think she really believes that though. Hehe.

Who would you love to collaborate with?
As an individual; Taeyeon, IU, Miyeon, Yuqi, Wendy, Seulgi, Yoohyeon... just to name a few.
As a group I'd love it if we collaborate with Dreamcatcher! I think we'd all make something pretty epic.

How did you feel after performing on your debut stage?
It was an incredible moment. A little surreal but certainly something I will never forget. For the 3 of us to finally stand on stage for the first time and introduce ourselves through our music and choreography, it made me feel proud and was perhaps one of the happiest times of my life. I was nervous but excited before the performance, after though I was so calm and constantly smiling.

What are your goals as an idol?
To make music that means something... To encourage and inspire. Dreams are meant to be achieved, life is meant to be lived. And there should be no shame in the way you go about living your life and if you want to achieve something, believe in yourself.

Dia dhuit! My name is Ava and I'm MidLight's energetic main dancer!

Who are your favourite artists?
I'm a huge fan of Twice! I went to their concert in Saitama back in 2018 and I loved every second.
In general, I love to listen to girl groups. Oh My Girl and WJSN are also groups I look up to.

Explain the trainee process -- how were you picked?
I took ballet classes since I was three years old and I always knew I wanted do something on stage.
After I went to Twice's concert, I visited my family in Tokyo and saw an ad online from a new music company and they were looking for trainees to debut a new girl group.
I thought: 'this is my chance and I will regret it if I don’t try my luck!'
I filled out the application form and also recorded a video of me dancing, but it took me two days to actually hit 'send', because I thought: 'What if I'm not good enough?'
One week later, I received an email that I passed the first round and that they would like to see me in person.
I went to the company's branch in Tokyo and performed Time for the Moonlight by Gfriend.
They also asked me if I could sing something, so I chose Incomplete by James Bay.
The audition director told me that I have a promising voice and they would love to accept me as a trainee.
A few weeks later, I moved to Seoul and met Esmée and Keana and I soon knew auditioning was the best decision of my life.

If you weren’t an idol, what would you be doing?
Since I can’t imagine a life without dancing, I would probably work as a dance instructor or a choreographer.
I also love children - so I would maybe work as a nursery school teacher?

Any talents, or charms?
Well, apart from dancing, I'm really good at imitating anime characters, haha!
I'm also a pretty good cook and love to prepare meals for my members.
The girls especially love when I cook my granf's irish stew.

Who would you love to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Twice or Oh My Girl.
And I agree with Esmée, I think our concept would really match with Dreamcatcher's.

How did you feel after performing on your debut stage?
It was the most breath-taking and exciting experience of my life!
To stand on stage with Esmée and Keana, after we practiced hard for so long - it was like a dream came true.

What are your goals as an idol?
Like Esmée already said, we want to inspire people.
I want people to find comfort in our music.
I would like to continue to grow as an artist and show everyone my hardworking self.

Hey guys!!! I am Keana, leader and main rapper of girlgroup called MidLight!

Who are your favourite artists?
Too many honestly but I really enjoy rappers/soloists such like Chanmina, Reichi, Dean and Bryn!
Explain the trainee process -- how were you picked?
I was travelling to Seoul with my class few years ago and I participated there for a rap battle.
A manager approached me and she said she was impressed by my rapping skills.
Then she offered me an audition and I succeeded! Despite my poor Korean skills and that I am completely new to the country, I guess my impressive rapping skills helped me to pass.

If you weren’t an idol, what would you be doing?
Well I have always been interested in music, so I think I would have been a rapper or a soloist.
I was about to debut in a Japanese indie rock band based in my country : Switzerland. But the other members decided to relocate in Sendai, Japan and I couldn't join them... Unfortunately I didn't get the visa.

Why didn't you get the visa? I thought you were Japanese.
My mother is half Japanese but she grew up here in Switzerland. She didn't keep that nationality and you know even if she did we have to keep only one nationality by the age of 23. *cough* Well maybe I could have moved as I was a little bit younger than twenty-three at that time.

I can play the guitar and drums!

I would love collaborating with K-rap artists, I am not familiar with them but it could be fun!
