Hybe's mindset is like you either gotta dominate the market or you're useless. We saw that with gfriend and Nu'est, we may see it again with fromis_9. I just looked up their commercial stats on wikipedia, though Supersonic hit 2. on Circle their recent comeback dropped in physical sales by 80,000 copies. A lot of girl groups are doing better.

Besides, Pledis has a HORRIBLE track record with girlgroups. I'm happy Fromis is still active with their situation but I don't see them lasting.

my counterargument to that is

companies don't just need to make a profit but a profitable Return on Investment (ROI)

and I don't know that much about either Gfriend or Nu'est financial situation but obviously someone at Hybe decided to let Gfriend go and in turn debut LSFM because they thought that LSFM would make them even more money

now I can agree that some other less successful/nugu company would have kept Gfriend since they are profitable but to hybe they aren't profitable enough - one can see the same situation happening to Fromis_9 to a certain extent - it seems that they are just letting the contract expire

I just don't understand when they could've made just lessened the budget for Gfriend? Like you look at their earlier stuff and it's way more financially modest. And even if they weren't profitable for the ONE year they were in Hybe, their discography to many k-pop fans (including me) was revived, especially with Mago/Walpurgis Night. They could've lasted with their 'renaissance,' but Hybe didn't give them a chance for another year. As an older group Gfriend didn't have to be super active too, just one comeback a year by now could've easily sufficed. It's a horrible decision on Hybe's part. As you said, Hybe can take some losses, why couldn't they do it with Gfriend OR Nu'est?

Irony is that, despite the fact that Lesserafim is selling hundreds more than Gfriend (understandable bc they belong to a generation where physical sales in general exploded), Source Music is still in HUGE debt. It's just about bad management and not knowing where to cut off budget. And with what they have done to New Jeans, Lesserafim's sales and charting are actually hurt. Source Music was better off before joining HYBE. Even in 2017 which was a dry year for Gfriend and the peak was over, they were making profit out of it. Now they got a huge group but also a huge debt.

That being said, it is so hard to be objective on New Jeans' situation. They are different than fifty fifty in that they have the public's support. But Hybe made it clear that they wont do as they please. Can they really take over an agency as huge as HYBE in a legal battle??? If they wont, will they be put on hiatus? Will their hiatus damage HYBE's reputation and gradually hurt all their artists' sales like how LESSERAFIM's sales suddenly halved???

And then again, I wonder had New Jeans stayed just quiet, things would be better for them in a financial stand point? The girls dont credit themselves enough, they can occasionally compose songs, they are great dancers, its not like their whole existence as an artist depended on Heejin. They still seemed to have schedules a few days ago. Had they stayed quiet and worked with the new team, maybe everything would die out and they wouldnt hear things like "ignore her" in the hair salon. Now they really set a fire by doing this.

yeah bigger groups have far bigger loses To stay in HYBE, LSFM has -320k first week sales for their last album compared to the previous one (which already had a huge decline from the album before)

Almost all girl groups sales went down by a lot, but I think it's also true for most BG

Because Hybe as shown by this controversy isn't run like a good business since if you can't make money from Gfriend and Nu'est then those groups certainly aren't the problem and you should be budgeting them the most you can while turning a profit. Gfriend especially didn't have to be anything fancy or expensive and had they waited until touring was available again the next year then it wouldn't have even been a problem as Gfriend was one of the highest paid girl groups for events outside the Big 3 before they were under Hybe.

It seemed like both Gfriend and Nu'est had plans for the rest of the year at the time of hearing about their disbandment though so have to think having to bail Source out had a lot to do with ending the groups.

Better irony is that from what I know a lot of Hybe is in debt??? And that's having a lot of repercussions on the idols especially, txt and enhypen getting overworked, This ador shit. they've obviously wasted too much money trying to dominate and are now having to pay the price.

Hybe affiliated journalists were caught pushing negative articles about Fromis once they publicly started complaining. When pledis announced it, the members said it was news to them as well

Comeback would have happened eventually but I think public backlash pushed the company along a bit
