but isnt having to hide your sexuality out of fear of prosecution or discrimination exactly what makes someone oppressed? black lgbt have to face racism on top of homophobia/transphobia which puts them at a higher risk of being hate crimed ofc and thats horrifying, but coming out as lgbt is dangerous and scary for everyone.

i mean sure white people do still have privilege but outside of that it's still a different experience for everyone. idk how it is in america but there are a lot of predominantly white countries including the one i live in where the lgbtq community is still very much oppressed. sure you can hide your queerness but the fact that you need to hide any part of who you are to be treated normally shows that there is a problem. and there is always a risk of being outed against your will so opening up about your sexuality is not always a choice.

I would like to respectfully disagree. LGBT+ individuals are still oppressed. There are many countries where being LGBT+ is punishable by the death penalty. They have to hide themselves, in result being detrimental to their mental health. Living in the wrong body, constantly being misgendered, hearing hate speech towards LGBT+... all those add up. And what happens if they do come out? In countries, even that are seemingly free to be LGBT+, there is still discrimination. I'm going to use the example of adoption, now it's okay for LGBT+ couples to adopt (as it should be) but they are subject to favoritism towards straight couples. "Most states lack legal protections to guard against favoring heterosexual parents over gays and lesbians in adoption and foster care placements, and the landscape has historically been unfriendly toward same-sex couples as parents" (Zarin-Goldberg, 2013). In addition, one can't change being gay, they can hide it, yes, but it still affects their mental health. Sexuality and gender identity are not a choice. If a person has to constantly hide who they are just so they can get "ahead" in life, what kind of identity crisis will they have? And suppose it is in a culture where getting married is heavily encouraged, and expected to make love to their husband or wife even though they are not attracted to them. This is why suicide rates are high among the LGBT+ community.

what do you mean you dont have to come out? shouldnt everyone be free to live and love freely? you only stay in the closet out of fear for your (social) life and that by definition makes you oppressed, regardless of race or nationality. even when you're out and dont have to fear for your life its very likely you'll be denied the right to marry, adopt, donate blood, enlist... whether you hide your sexuality or not, black or white, you will still face oppression.

I wouldn't necessarily say they don't face oppression as it is still unacceptable in a lot of spaces to be LGBTQ+ even if you are white. It's easier than if you are a POC LGBTQ+ since you don't face the racism or other connotations but yeah respectfully disagree since it's still difficult.

I used some research to back up my answer but also some of this is coming from a personal place. Growing up I was told that LGBT+ people should not have rights and should be punished by death, which I obviously disagree with. I'm openly biromantic-asexual but I still get told it's unnatural and if I "wanna try the girl thing I shouldn't do it in public". I'm not ready to open up about my gender because of this. I was told "gender is what's in your pants", no it's not. I fear the judgment, and the oppression, but it's also tearing me apart inside. I have to hide a part of me to conform to society's expectations.

as a german with a russian background I have to disagree. I have a pretty good relationship with my family but I know due to religion that my family wouldn’t be accepting. I grew ip hearing a lot of awful things about queer people that make my blood boil. I might be 25 but coming out as pansexual to especially my family definitely causes me to be anxious and in fear that the relationship I do have with them would be completely broken.
I also heard super incentive things about my own sexuality and other sexualities that fall under the bi-umbrella from co-workers before so that is also a factor to count in.

No matter what people are influenced by many things and each country has still a lot of learning to do to be accepting to those that don’t fall under their world view. Even some queers aren’t perfect and can say bi-phobic and trans-phobic things. All in all we need to still educate and no one is less than someone else.

white queer people are still oppressed because they're queer, but dont have to face discrimination because of race. there are tons of factors, like the definition explains, that may influence how oppressed someone is. white people certainly like to insert themselves into conversations that they are not the center of, and white lgbtq+ are no exception to this rule. this is coming from white nonbinary lesbian.

tl;dr: queer people are marginalized period, but based on other factors like race, class, and gender, that might add onto someone's experiences with prejudice and discrimination.

as for the brief discussion about not having to come out, i dont think coming out should be a thing, like i wish it wasn't. coming out is more for straight people, to just let them know "hey, im not straight/cisgender!" i hope in the future coming out goes out of fashion, and labels don't exist either, everyone just exists and respects other people.

I disagree with this but I'd say it would depend on where you live and this opinion is one that might be shaped entirely on your experience like mine, for example, the white queers in my city who are more financially privileged will usually have cliques and connections everywhere while experiencing full acceptance and they don't care if their family doesn't because they have many others who do, so I've always had this image that the white queers who live in less privileged areas and where more religious groups live too have a difficult time and I've seen how that plays out. but no in general, white queers can be just as oppressed as poc queers because being queer in general unfortunately would put you in that position for this, not your colour~
