I rarely read romance but also sometimes find it super annoying for romance to be inserted into every YA book when it's literally NOT needed in EVERY FUCKING BOOK!
If you're reading a YA book that is writing by a female for females, then odds are there are going to be a romance plot attached. I'm not trying to generalize, but the YA books I've read written by men tend to have less romance plots/sub-plots. I haven't read all of Rick Riordans stuff, but that which I read didn't really have that heavy a focus on romance. And Christopher Pike only included romance as an aside and it was pretty comical how he did (e.g. main character sita who is a thousands old vampire finds out her long dead husband was reincarnated as a high school student, but has a girlfriend. So she shows up at his house naked in his bathtub...) It was only like a chapter and didn't have either person going into a romeo & juliet type delusion. The main character wasn't belting out, "I can't live if living is without you..." But alas I do see such things in female written romance YA.
