it's my main beef with kpop fans - they refuse to see problems as anything but individual issues, and in doing so they fail to realise that it's the industry as a whole that's fucked
another example of that is people not understanding just
how widespread the sexualisation of minors is in the industry. people zero in on individuals. for example: "min heejin is such a creep look at her creative direction for shinee/f(x)/newjeans!" and yes you're so right. but like. this min heejin is often blamed for other aspects of rookie shinee's marketing. like, the fact that they did a show in 2008 called "shinee's yeonhanam" which was about them going on dates with older women (yeonhanam means a younger man, and typically is used in a romantic context, like a bf that's younger than you are). in 2008 all members, except onew, were minors under south korean law. taemin was 15. no doubt, it was creepy as fuck.
but i really don't think their then creative director had the power to pull company strings and say "let's team up with mnet and make this show!" no. it was a conscious choice to market shinee to the so-called "noona" (and before you come at me, you
know what I mean, don't you
dare be purposefully obtuse and say "well noona just means older woman it's a term of respect and endearment in korean stop sexualising the word!" i'm not the one sexualising it, there's a section of fans who like their underage male faves with wide eyes cute faces caked with makeup calling them in their voices not yet fully developed "noona saranghaeyo!" and get a dirty dirty kick out of it. don't be even dumber (purposefully!) and say "well my fave is younger than me does that make me a creep?" no it doesn't dimwit, you know i'm not talking about you, you stan talent/personality and that talent/personality happens to be a bit younger than you) fanbase, catering exactly to their tastes.
and why the noona fanbase? because noonas have disposable income, that's why. teen girls are gonna stan anyway, they're taemin's age or younger, they'd think it's cool someone their age is a wholeass celebrity. but they're spending their parents' hard-earned money and there's no guarantee their parents won't say "no jiyeon i won't give you your pocket money this month, you're failing math and it's because you spend all your time looking at those shinee boys. let me have my soju in peace, i've had a long day at work." and that is even if they get pocket money in the first place. no, that teen girl fanbase, wide as it is, would have to be supplemented by the noona fanbase, the regular salarywomen who unwind after their long days at work by thinking unimaginable thoughts about herself and 17-year-old minho. or 15-year-old taemin. she can't choose, can she? so she can't choose between buying minho merch or taemin merch, so she buys both, because she can afford to.
yes, she's a creep. but who is the one handpicking these cute boys and serving them up on a platter to her, and all the other women like her? caking their faces with makeup but putting them on the girl group diet so that they'd remain skinny, so their faces look old enough to be on cam but their bodies look skinny, much unlike most boys of that age who'd naturally have gained a bit of muscle after puberty? who's the one at the meeting who said, "our new boygroup, they're going to be targeted to older fans. songwriter, write a song about them having a crush on an older woman, make it very innocent, very first love-ish. mv director, cast this female trainee as their love interest, she's actually older than all of them, she'll look the part. oh and make sure to take individual shots of the boys singing at the camera, fans do so love it when it looks like the boys are singing
to them. guys, this is
so going to work, it worked 4 years ago when shim changmin sang straight to the camera wanting to be his love interest's
cat and dwink milky wilky, it's going to work today."
and it still works.
