Specifically about what language you speak. Let's say your family speaks another language at home primarily, or you're visiting someone who's family does so, but the guest or you (depending on the scenario) doesn't speak that language. Is it appropriate in your opinion for them to speak another language the guest doesn't understand? For me I feel awkward when someone visits and my parents speak to me in Russian. I have had someone tell me they're fine with it after I mentioned that to them, but I still would prefer my parents to speak English when around guests. What's your guy's opinions on this? :susPepe:

Hmmm imo, I think its fine to speak in another language. Unless you are talking to the guest, but then you’ll have to speak english :lisalaugh:
And maybe it depends on the situation? If you’re eating dinner together, it’s seems more appropriate to me to talk in English. Idk, I think I have mixed feelings about this LOL

I think it's fine. I know one of the concerns could be maybe theyre gossiping about me >.> which im guilty of but sometimes that language just feels like a safety net.
Both my parents are fluent in english. My mom has a typical American accent as well. A lot of times theyll be speaking in Spanish or Gujju around their only english speaker friends.

Even between themselves XD when I was reeeeeally young, my parents didn't know each other's native language 100% so whenever they would "calmly discuss" something, one side would be in spanish and the other side in gujju :lisalaugh: and they would ask the other to repeat or have my brother and I translate. :catglare: We lied a lot translating.

My family only speaks English, but I speak French and so do some other people we know. Personally I have no issue with it if someone is speaking a language that I don’t understand. I am a guest in their home and they should feel comfortable in their own home. However, where I find it rude is if they don’t make the effort to communicate with me at all.
