Introduction:
It's been a while since I reviewed the Darth Maul mini series, which you can read here.
This time around, I decided on a much more detailed and lengthier series, Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith.
@Darth_Felflame has already reviewed the first issue here.

So, I reviewed the first volume Imperial March, which collects issues #1 to 6. This is just the introduction to the rest of the story which I plan on getting to next.

Synopsis

Written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith chronicles Vader's rise as the powerful Sith overlord and Emperor Palpatine's right hand man. The first volume picks up immediately after the events of Return of the Jedi. Anakin Skywalker has defected to the Dark Side, Order 66 has beene executed leading to the near extermination of the entire Jedi order, Obi Wan has defeated Anakin and left him for dead but Darth Sidious rescues him just in time and gives him a cybernetic body. Upon learning that his wife Padme Amidala has passed away, the newly born Darth Vader is beside himself and decides to fully commit to his master and the Empire.

The first volume basically outlines the Emperor putting Vader through his first tests, as he tasks his apprentice with getting a lightsaber of his own. With the Jedi defeated and Empire propaganda seeping through the galaxy, the Jedi have been branded traitors and criminals, all their lightsabers destroyed. Vader has to find a Jedi to take a lightsaber from, and bend the Kyber crystal to his own will, bleeding his emotions through it to get his crimson red saber. For as Palpatine explains, a Sith's weapon is taken. Not given.

The rest of the book follows Vader on a silent but brutal path of destruction as he wreaks havoc and leaves ruin in his path of seeking out a surviving Jedi, and beating him to get his own weapon. It's mostly setup for what I'm sure are more intriguing story arcs that lie in wait, but still fascinating to read. Vader finds a worthy nemesis in Jedi Master Kirak Infil'a. Infil'a had taken the Barash vow and chosen to remain in self exile, forbidden from interfering in any Jedi matters even when he felt the great disturbance in the Force post most of the Jedi deaths due to Order 66. So when Vader turns up to fight him, he's only too happy to oblige, having secretly been waiting for this opportunity to avenge his brotherhood.

Review

Unlike the Darth Maul comic I reviewed earlier, this Darth Vader series is set in a far more interesting time- between the prequels and the original trilogy, which gives us plenty of time to explore new events, characters and development of Vader into this cold, calculating killing machine we first saw him as.
To enforce that image in our heads, the writers make the smart choice of never following the story from Vader's POV. Sure, we follow him as he carries on his journey, but the story is driven forward from the perspectives of the people/droids/creatures he encounters. You don't see Vader's thoughts at length, but you can make a pretty good guess judging by his actions, his steely determination and cold rage as he stops at nothing to get his way. For most of the people who meet him, Vader comes across as the Terminator himself- unfeeling and untouchable. It makes our Sith Lord an extremely menacing adversary, the antagonist in his own book.
The art is gorgeous once again, and the action sequences are very imaginative and well drawn. Vader doesn't have his lightsaber for most of the book, so he relies on the Dark side of the force to use in combat, and it's shown in many great ways that are ingenious and memorable.

We have spaceship fights where Vader uses his Force abilities to evade, seek and destroy.

Here, Vader uses the Force to STOP AN EXPLOSIVE FROM DETONATING with one hand while he wrecks 2 Stormtroopers at the same time.

And here we have Vader being truly dark, as he floods an entire city to distract and kill his opponent. Merciless.

I'd highly recommend this to any Darth Vader fan. You get to see glimpses and are offered an extremely tiny window into his mind, which keeps up his mystique. You get some amazing action sequences featuring him, which there weren't a lot of in the movies. You get incredible art and the setup of an epic plot to unravel in the next volumes. As a standalone, this would be harmless fun. As the start to what promises to be an epic series, it's essential reading.

Here, you can see Vader finally bending the green Kyber crystal to his will, forming the base of his own lightsaber.

I'll move on to the next installments now. Give this a go.

8.5/10.

Reviewing all the Sith series i see :sakUwu:

I think it's cool that rather than telling Darth Vaders story in his own point they choose to tell it from viewpoint of other characters. That's rly clever way to approach it, and probably build him more menacing.

Yeah they do have scenes with just Vader or Vader and Sidious but you mostly just watch these as a spectator, you don't go inside his head. And other times, you'll see some characters going about their business and then Vader comes in and fucks shit up lol.

Oki, nice review, add more of what you feel about certain things he does or just generally how you liked the book and why and it'll improve the review. Since pictures (even tho they are welcome) don't add to the review quality :lazypotato:
