He's recongnized as one of the pre-cursors to hip hop and you can hear the rudimentary foundations in this song.

i'm kinda surprised that's his biggest song
but at the same time i totally get it
it has a really strong message that it just keeps pushing
and it's a real cultural touchstone for the time too

Well don't actually quote me on that.

It may be more precise to say it's arguably his most lasting song. In that it's legacy outpaced and it's referenced most frequently. I don't know that it was his biggest commercial song. I'm not totally familiar with his release history.
