Recently as you might've seen on the news. Japan was hit by Typhoon Hagibis which brought with it the heaviest rainfall seen in the Central and Kanto Regions of Japan since 1958. It was also the first time in decades that Tokyo, Kanagawa and other outlaying prefectures were issued with a level 5 warning which is the highest level on Japan's weather warning system.

Along with the death and destruction that Typhoon Hagibis brought with it, it also brought some sights that are very unusual within Tokyo.

Always a busy metropolis with millions of people moving about. One would think that there's nothing that could disrupt all of this bustling behaviour, and on a normal weekend you would be right. But what about when a typhoon is about to pay an unwanted visit? Expect the city to turn into a ghost town... And that's exactly what happened at around 1pm last Saturday when all the shops boarded up and train lines suspended their operations in anticipation of the arrival of Typhoon Hagibis.

Akihabara which at this time on a weekend would be a hive of activity as otaku and tourists flock to buy anime goods and electronics was deserted.. If you were to stand in Akihabara at this time it would feel like you were in a horror film. Deserted of all people and any activity other than the advertisements still eerily blasting out their cheerful anime tunes.

In comparison this is how Akihabara will usually be at this time on a weekend.

Elsewhere Tokyo Station which connects all of the Tokyo metropolitan area and areas across most of Japan was deserted of all people. On a given day you would be battling through the crowds to get your shinkansen to Kyoto or the Yamanote Line to elsewhere in Tokyo.

The famous shinkansen (bullet train) stopped in its tracks, unable to go anywhere.

And what about the famous Shibuya Crossing? None of the thousands of people who'd be making this crossing every time that light turned green were there.

The same was also said for Harajuku. A fashion area where the Japanese youth and tourists alike flock to.

If you could imagine yourself as the last person in Tokyo. This is what it would be like......

It’s so weird seeing that part of Japan so empty. I remember being pushed like a sardine the first time I visited...
Only a typhoon could make Tokyo go as quiet as a village.....

We ended up spending the whole day indoors and chilled with some films as the typhoon hit (whilst I had NHK news streaming on my phone for all news alerts and warnings)

Pretty crazy!

There's something about empty urban areas at night that I find comforting.

Sometimes I like to go to the local store and get a coffee in the middle of the night and just sit and take in the stillness of the night.
