It would be an understatement to say Sonic the Hedgehog's trailer sparked controversy amongst fans. After the reel debuted earlier this week, fans new and old were quick to roast the footage for its portrayal of Sonic, but that will all be changing soon. After all, the director has hit up Twitter to address fans, and Jeff Fowler has good news for makeover advocates.

Yes, that is right. Sonic is getting a design change, and Fowler is thanking fans for their patience with the adaptation in light of its recent trailer.

"Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be," the director wrote.

So far, there is no timeline for when these design changes will go down or be revealed. Fowler simply says Paramount and Sega are committed to doing Sonic the Hedgehog justice, and fans are cautiously excited to see what these alterations will amount to.

For some fans, the design works as is, but others have their heart set on some major changes. A group of vocal fans were quick to admonish Sonic for his human teeth as they simply didn't suit the hedgehog very well. Others pushed back on Sonic's facial features, particularly his oddly proportioned snout and eyes. As for some, well - they asked for an entirely new design of Sonic that more closely mirrors his video game aesthetic, and a viral piece of artwork shows such a look could work. However, each of these alterations will cost money, and netizens are certain this design change will keep its budget in mind as Sonic the Hedgehog hits the drawing board.

So, are you excited to see how this design change will go over? Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter @MeganPetersCB to talk all things comics and anime!

They should have had something similar to the Sonic Boom design to be honest.

I really have to wonder why they are being imcompetent like this. Cause often things get tested by test audiences and they collect feedback on things like design etc. And this isn't only with the Sonic movie, but also the Aladdin tha they had to fix cause people really didn't like the Genie. I'd think these huge companies would really do proper research of audience response towards the character designs and also like really put their mind into the character design when they are doing these rather than sent unfinished things out to public and then promise fixes when there is outrage. Or is that just marketing tactic? :sanathink:

Yeah they should have made it closer to the original instead of trying to make his proportions look realistic.

Who knows what goes on into their minds. I don't usually question big companies' decisions because they most probably have a team who knows better than me but sometimes..... you just have to lol

Suddenly, we're not too far from this lmfao

It might be good for publicity. I didn't even know a movie was coming out before this scandal.

So there are two things here:
1. This seems...planned. There was apparently pushback for a while and Sega wasn't even happy with the design, and yet Paramount moved forward? So far it doesn't look like they're changing the timeline for release, which means they've only got a few months to completely re-do the character. If this was for marketing, it's entirely possible they already had revamped the design and have it ready but released a trailer with the crappy one to create buzz. However, if that's not the case....

2. Some VFX artists are about to get so screwed if they really are having to re-do in the same time period as the initial release. It means they have, I think 4 months, to not only finish everything on their original timeline but also some teams will be starting from scratch. This isn't union work so they'll likely be pushed to the brink working tons of unpaid overtime. This is the kind of SNAFU that causes VFX houses to go bankrupt to finish a project. The people who should be affected, the studios, execs, etc won't be hurt but everyone who put their all into the film will and that's honestly disgusting and why I'm not necessarily happy about the announcement.

It seems plausible. I mean are they really happy about how Sonic turned out? I'm almost sure they expected the backlash. No way they can get away butchering such an iconic character so maybe it was part of a marketing strategy and they already had another model ready but if not, they're really screwed big time if they push through with the original release date.
