With gymnastics, especially women's gymnastics in the past, there was always a feeling of you get one shot because by the time you're 20 or older you're not going to be able to come back. Of course many gymnasts have broken this stereotype, especially of late, but I'd like to talk about one of the athletes in question. Rebecca Downie. She competes for Great Britain. These Paris Olympics are her 3rd Olympic Games. She competed at Beijing 2008, Rio 2016, and now in Paris 2024. She missed both the London 2012 Olympics and Tokuyo 2021. The Tokyo one was controversial for a few reasons. She and her sister missed the last trials for the Olympics because their brother had passed away a few weeks before. Given her abilities, it's also believed that she may have been left off the team because she and her sister spoke up about systematic abuse within the British gymnastics system. So some believe that they were r4etalitating against her and that thats why she wasn't on the team. But she competed in Paris this year, and she did well in team finals, despite it being an emotional day (it fell on her brothers birthday). She's said it's her last Olympics, which is fair considering the physical and mental toll gymnastics takes. But I thought she deserved more attention than she gets , and I hope that things go well for her from now on
