No other company has as many openly depressed/struggling idols or idols getting into attitude controversies because they can't even bring themselves to look happy on stage

Taeyeon, Jessica, Sulli, Krystal, Luna, Wendy, Yeri, Irene.
Not once did they ever step in when they were getting dragged and harassed

SM doesn't even do anything about sasaengs so this doesn't surprise me at all. The only thing they care about is money and attention and sadly sasaengs and hate comments do just that. It makes me feel so angry and so disgusted. How many others need to go through the same thing before SM finally learns. They really need to make some changes. This is just so unbelievably heartbreaking.

I'm bit mixed of blaming SM things like hate comments, cause i'm not sure how much they can do, i think lot of hate comments would fall under free speech. But it does seem like SM idols get targeted quite lot of attitude controversies and over most trivial things, some of their idols like Yeri just get baffling amount of hate when u think that they haven't rly done anything to warrant that hate? The image of idols being perfect boyfriends and girlfriends is a problem, not enough humanity and error is allowed for them. But then I don't know if SM idols in general get more hate and if SM responds aren't as good as other companies, cause lot of idols just get tons of hate.

So I'm not sure if SM just could have done sth that would have prevented this or not.

this is awful. i know they're not the only ones to blame because the way the entire korean society treats mental illness needs to change, but this doesn't hide the fact that sm treats their artists terribly. it's almost like they aren't human beings to them anymore. sulli was not the only one who suffered from malicious comments everywhere, yet they never cared about anyone. who knows what other idols under sm might be dealing with. sm needs to wake up.

At the end of the day she was on like her 3rd or 4th contract.

If that is the case then why was she resigning?

Also no one forces anyone to read the social media sites.
Partly why i am ambivalent about the hate comment topic except on like v or insta lives. those need to be strictly controlled and monitored.
It would help if they crucified some of these kids who have gone way over the line (like the Yeri commenter), but the artist are too willing to let it go.
Nothing happened to that dude at all, or the kids who give other artists death threats.
dox them and the families at the very least.

The dude who drug Taeyeon off stage they let him go, bad idea make an example, who cares if he is crazy.

on a separate note they are doing an autopsy how weird wold it be if this was not self inflicted.

2nd contract
Her renewing doesn't negate the fact that they failed in that aspect and failed her. SM is a record label and an entertainment management label. Protecting their artists and the image and integrity of their artists is their job but they continuously choose to let these saesangs, antis and journalists run amok on theim. That is a failure on their part regardless of how you try and spin it and a mistake that has affected just about every one of their artists.

Don't use the internet is also a pretty paper thin argument, especially for an entertainer and in the digital age.

She asked them to help, to do their job, and they didn't.
That's the bottom line

bummer, quit. Stop reading the internet its not hard.
It is the artists choice to keep inflicting chat pain on themselves.
No way its sm's job to control the entire internet. If its anyone's job which i doubt, it the police would be the ones with the responsibility.

Other companies seem to doing "not their job" just fine. Name one other that has this issue at this level
BigHit takes action for BTS, JYPE and YG take action for their groups when necessary. Nugu companies do it. Even the most useless entertainment company in Korea will take action for Jessica when she needs it
Suzy, IU, Seolhyun, Jennie etc, have all reached the same "It Girl Status" as Irene or Krystal and had no issue suing commentators. They still get negative comments now and then but they aren't openly crucified, lied about and bullied.

Why is SM incapable of doing it?

SM refuses to act and leaves a vulnerability that is exploited. There's a reason why a majority of the worst saesaengs belong SM fandoms and that's because they can get away with it. People genuinely think they can own SM idols and abuse them without repercussions

I don't know about any of those other deals. I do know that when sm has acted nothing happens to the kids who comment once they find them.
And i do not know of any commented going to jail or even paying a huge fine ect.
This is not to say that i do not think people should be able to issues death threats ect.
Folks who cross the line should be crucified the chick who poisoned tvxq, the bomb threat guys, the dude who drug taeyeon off stage ect.
Destroy their lives make an example of them.
Show there is a devastating cost. To my knowledge no one does this.

folks say sorry and all is forgiven.
Sure suits are filed but nothing happens that i know of.
Its just media noise.

Oh i read that they did track the ip addresses but they were out of country/ temp i guess like the apink bomb guy. It does seem plausible that the real evil folks attempt to hide themselves this way.
Never the less i do wish there was some way to get the real dangers like the acid throwing or other physical attack posters. Those the police should be on vigorously and they have much more latitude than a company.

I have no idea how Korean legal system works when it comes to internet bullying. What types of punishments are the officials able to give? Like can they fine people or something? Where is the line when a nasty comment turns actually illegal?

I'm curious, because this shit truly sucks, but I wonder if there is any actual, effective way to keep someone from just changing their IP address and continuing their work. If someone's as devoted to harrassing a celebrity as these people apparently were, I'm fairly sure they won't stop unless there is an actual punishment to be given.

Like, absolutely, each company should do everything they can to prevent things like this from happening, and I sure hope that there is actual legal basis for them to work with. Otherwise it's kind of a no-can-do situation.

Fines, prison time, goes on their record and effects their ability to get jobs

At the very least suing acts as a deterrent for antis and puts limitations to what they can and can't say. Even if most companies don't persue it to the end or only prosecute a handful, it sends a pretty clear message and the behavior tends to ebb away

SM never actually takes legal action. They threaten to on behalf of certain artists but never go through with it.

This is a comment from Knetizen earlier this year when they threaten action on behalf of EXO again
2. [+1,097, -26] SM “suing” has always just been talks with no actions, they need to go until the end with the suing of malicious rumors about their artists this time. Legal actions are related to stocks so that’s why never dared to sue until the endㅋㅋㅋㅋ
The IP excuse is also very weak in my opinion, especially in this particular case

Crimes have to reported for the police to act on it and I can't see any idol reporting it if the company tells them not to
SM is never going to sue or prosecute fans regardless of how far that they go

SJ getting run off the road by antis
TVXQ getting poisoned
Someone dragging Taeyeon off stage
Someone stalking out Soshi's dorms and almost assaulting Jessica
Taeyeon getting dragged off stage
EXO nearly getting snatched up and kidnapped by antis
Several instances of not providing enough airport security and artists getting mobbed
EXO and Red Velvet constantly being called and harassed by saesaengs to their point where they are always changing their number
Saesaengs breaking into dorms and apartments

The craziest saesaengs are always from SM fandoms because they have always refused to do anything about it

I mean, it's nice to hear that there are some that these people can actually be punished somehow. I haven't looked into the issue much from a legal standpoint, so I wouldn't know. I don't know how publicly companies are allowed to disclose individual charges either. I'm just still worried about how far these messages have to go before the officials are actually able to do anything, because I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the threshold was set way too high. For instance where I live, I've noticed that people can go insanely far before it's a legal issue.

Also an excuse for what? For SM not taking legal action or? Not an excuse for anything really, I was only curious and wondering whether suing someone over online harassment in Korea can actually lead to something that yields results, since you can't shake off the worst ones just by blocking or threatening them or by making them pay a fine.

But at the end of the day internet harassment is a quite complex issue with quite a few variables that extends far beyond SM. Work definitely needs to be done, also outside of Korea.
