So I watched Guardian(the Chinese Drama) a month ago and since then I was on the hunt for a new drama on with similar story line (but better CGI) and a week ago I stumbled upon THE UNTAMED. It is a drama adaptation of a novel and anime MO DAO ZU SHI (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation). I am in love with this drama now. The cinematography, the actors and the plot are all so good!

The synopsis:
The story takes place in a world of martial arts with the five great clans of Lan, Jiang, Nie, Wen and Jin maintaining peace and order. With the Wen clan being the most powerful, Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan), the son of an old acquaintance of the Jiang clan, becomes close friends with Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo) of the Lan clan. The two of them stumble upon the Lan family's dark secret that is also to be their legacy. Further digging by the two friends reveal a grand conspiracy. Wei Wuxian tries to save innocent members of the Wen clan but fails and disappears.
16 years later, Wei Wuxian reappears and crosses paths with an old friend Lan Wangji. As the mystery unfolds, it leads them to the true villain behind it all.
It's a story about friendship, family, love, betrayal and redemption with supernatural elements

Entertaining drama for sure despite its flaws. Well I guess for those who have not read the novel it'll be more "addictive" or surprising concerning the plot...

They've toned down the "BL" part (well it's based on a BL novel) to bromance (due to censorship) but it is still clear that there is a romance subtext between the two leads. So frankly, it is a really nice adaptation.

But I still prefer the novel (more details and more straigthforward lol), even with its long flashbacks and huge background infos...Yicheng arc is my favorite. The novel has its flaws too but it was an enjoyable read.

i agree that they toned down a lot especially the violence and the love story but i was not expecting bl coz well it's China.

I swear the flashback was exhausting at times both in the novel and the drama but it was a fantastic rendition of a cult classic.
