And I’m here to tell you why this category is absolutely atrocious

Spoiler: First, a quick reader on what the VMAs are for those of who aren’t familiar with it

Straight from Wikipedia, the Video Music Awards, or VMAs for short, is an award presented by the cable channel MTV to honor the best in the music video medium.

While it may seem like a good idea, this category is horrendous with the nominees and obviously shows that VMAs most likely made this category for attention
1. The most obvious thing is that they nominated a *whole* English song (Who Do U Love) for Monsta X when they have tons of other korean songs to choose from! They could’ve chosen any of their popular korean releases but instead they chose their fully English spoken song. As you can see right off the bat they did not do their research at all

They didn’t congratulate Monsta X for this nomination at all, only French Montana was acknowledged (the feature on Who Do U Love)

2. While BTS already have 4 nominations (Best Collab, Best Kpop, Best Art Direction, and Best Choreography, only Best Collab and Best Kpop are the fans able to vote on them) the BTS Amry think they deserve more main category nomination when BTS themselves have outsold many of the American competitors. Armies took offense to this and said it was racist for the VMAs to make a separate category for BTS and not put them in any other ones. And honestly I agree to an extent like BTS did not achieve so many things these past 2 years for the VMAs to only put them in the best kpop and best collab categories

3. Blackpink were the only girl group nominated. Not saying they don’t deserve to be nominated but there’s other groups out there that could’ve been nominated! Whether it would’ve been Twice, Red Velvet or some other deserving group, another gg should’ve been nominated. I mean it’s a “Best Kpop” category not a “Best Kpop Boy Group” category

All in all this category was a complete and utter train wreck and it seems like all they did was go on google and search “popular korean songs” and threw them in a category

This seems like a gimmick for some attention since they know kpop fans can bring in those views. And it’s sad, all the groups nominated do not deserve to be used in a disrespectful manner like really you’re gonna put Monsta X’s *ENGLISH* song in a category for kpop and not even acknowledge Monsta X?

Exactly like there’s soooo many other groups that could’ve been in that category and they could’ve put BTS in one of the main categories but I guess not

Ever since BTS, American shows have realized there’s a ton of money behind the Kpop industry. However, Kpop is still seen as a joke for them and that’s pretty clear based on who they nominate and etc. However, I’m not sure how accurate BTS outselling American artists are because even though BTS is huge, top artist spots still belong to others imo. But yeah, it’s obvious that they are using Kpop for clout and their desperate need for somewhat good ratings ^^’

These shows don't care about fairness. They care about views, money, and votes. Typical music industry.

To be fair, this is a bit inaccurate as MTV did also do a tweet for Monsta X...but only AFTER French Montana's (seriously wtf) and the fact that MX was put in a kpop category based on their country of origin alone despite having a song in full English...MTV isn't even trying but the M hasn't stood for music in over a decade so I'm unsurprised. They *try* to be inclusive by interviewing kpop groups and including them in things like TRL, but it is only to cash in. Making a kpop category just so they can give BTS an award is kind of BS and backhanded to all the other nominees because we know they're not gonna give it to anyone else, ESPECIALLY because this is fan voted and they're well aware of ARMY's Twitter supremacy. There are several categories they should have been nominated for instead, the fact that they weren't for video of the year, seeing as how it broke three Guinness World Records and was basically untouchable compared to any America release...

Lol I've said how ridiculous this is since I saw the news.

Of course they create a new Kpop category so they can award BTS while keeping them away from the main awards, and now in a half assed attempt to make it seem legit, they include some other nominees who've done some Western appearances/collabs although it's clearly obvious who's going to win. And this way they can keep all of Kpop "away" from their regular stuff lmao.

I'm bit mixed cause in other hand it's kinda nice kpop is recognized as genre, i think youtube was one of first that did it years ago though. It brings more attention to it. In other hand, it kinda feels like misdirection like let's shove kpop in this corner so it will stop interfering with normal music? But it's not like BTS only got nomination in kpop so it's not like they are only restricting them to one genre, and even if there is kpop genre it doesn't mean that kpop shouldn't and can't be nominated for best album or best artist etc. since those aren't reserved just one genre right they will anyways have people from pop, hip hop, rock etc genres?

In 2018 for the top artist chart sales by album they were second behind Eminen. I am speaking about theirs US sales.


The Vmas are a joke. I am not going to vote for that.
