I wonder if part of it is the different styles of songs, like a lot of people seem to think kpop is either joke-y like Gangnam Style or made for preteen girls (which there is Soda Pop, but then nothing else is in that same vein). Like it's showing people that kpop can be like Golden, Your Idol, etc. too.

The typical reaction of quite a few people I know was like "Wait, THIS is K-Pop?" when I showed them artists like AleXa, ID:Earth, Kardi, PITTA, Corbyn and (of course!) Dreamcatcher.

Imagine the first K-Pop song that many international Pop fans listened to in 2012 would have been 'Severly' by F. T. Island, 'Only One' by BoA or 'Ticket' by Nine Muses instead of 'Gangnam Style'. The impact would have been completely different.

I was going to ignore it on account of not having Netflix at the time and the teasers seeming like it was a kid's movie, but it's legit good! I see why it's connected with so many people.

Gangnam Style was my first K-pop song and honestly at the time and for a few years after I did not even know that it was K-pop or what K-pop was. To me it was just some meme joke song someone showed me. Something my friends and I laughed at for being weird and silly at the time.
