Thoughts On Mulan Remake


Well I'll just get to it then.


I was so disappointed in Mulan.


And I was looking forward to it more than any other of the Disney Remakes.

When I heard of the project and that they were removing some elements I was actually confident that would be what it needed. Instead of being a beat for beat remake, make it into a more wuxia style retelling of the Ballad of Hua Mulan.


Remove Mushu? Fine, but Mulan needs someone to connect and confide in. They provided no one.

The relationship with the other soldier suitor that hinted of a Shang like romance was barely developed.

Mulan hardly had any time or development of a relationship with any friends or allies. The what, one scene devoted to kind of hint at a comraderie with her fellow soldiers was paper thin and unsatisfactory.

By the time she has her mid battle heart to heart with the Female Sorcerer it's a pitiful attempt to have someone connect with and understand her.


It isn't enough.

And a personal pet peeve of mine is they gutted maybe the most memorable and emotionally satisfying relationship in the movie, that of Mulan and her father.

The scene in the animated version where after Mulan has ran away and fought in a war to honor and protect her father and family, all the while believing that he is ashamed of her and that she's not worth anything as she is.... Where she finally comes home and nervously deposits the gifts and valuables from the Emperor to show the honor she's brought to the family at his feet..... Still thinking he is ashamed of her....

And he embraces her and replies that the greatest honor is having her as a daughter..... Bringing her to tears .....


Instead of that powerful culmination and emotional payoff......

Mulan 2.0 gives us....


Dad: Oh Mulan you're home. That's neat I guess.

Jesus Christ. Where is the soul of this movie.



The problem with this Mulan is that they removed the heart and soul of this movie and didn't bother to replace it with anything.

What remained was a hollow film made by committee.

That at every step believes itself to be more grand, more affecting, more exciting, more moving than it actually is.


I watched the animated version again just the other day to remind myself why it is my favorite animated Disney movie ever.

Mulan 2.0 doesn't have a clue.

I thought it was pretty flat and I haven't even seen the original to have a nostalgia view of it since I only know the story of Mulan from Kingdom Hearts 2 basically

In an ancient China, where everyone dresses like power rangers...

Omg a colorful spider!

Some cheap vase breaks

Mulan bad, mulan exile

Then a dude spills water from the weirdest water bucket i've seen, gets exiled.

Now they prepare for a war for... Reasons.

And when i mean preparing, i mean, they take their time at it.

Must first go all shaolin temple shenanigans and chi knowledge and a century later a general comes and says the plan.

Then they fix the movie colors and they go kick some youkai asses while at it.

But the 300 Spartan chinese army didnt expect hitchcock Birds to be in this movie.

Bad birds attack spartan shields formation.

Mulan takes that at a personal level, makes that avalanche from the movie Balto with her chi.

Ip man finds mulan and say "mulan bad almost killed us. But mulan has heart, courage. Mulan lead china army now"

Mulan: btw im a girl

Ip man: oh, you get another exile for that later

Then mulan run, mulan thinks, mulan run again.

Mulan discovers the bird wasnt evil, but now poor bird dead.

So mulan angry, mulan very angry.

Mulam fights above a see saw. Some fire appears out of nowhere.

Mulan throws her toy sword and toy sword disintegrates in the fire

Now mulan very very angry

So angry that she saves the day again

Mulan sorry for being a woman, mulan sorry for destroying the toy sword. So mulan doesnt want the empire, not even a medal

(ah that avalanche? Mulan doesn't even remember that happened lol)

Mulan only wants to live with her fam and pals and... Idk. Do stuff?

Your story synopsis is spot on.


Mulan 2.0's problem is they removed so many elements in some misguided attempt to appeal to Chinese sentiment.

But didn't know how to do that while maintaining an emotional core.

Appealing to Chinese sentiment doesn't mean you wholesale remove any conviction of heart.

Some of the most beautiful and heartfelt films I've ever seen are Chinese.


I'm imagining a House Of Flying Daggers style remake.... And it hurts my soul in disappointment.

It's always the problem with remakes is running the risk of the company behind it now having a real grasp on why people liked the original of something so much and in the end they end up gutting it of key qualities that caused people to hold it to a high standard.

I'd even prefer if they kept the character interesting and changed all the rest

Here they changed everything but made it a fanfic level script

And i'm being unfair to people that write fanfics with that, a fanfic creator can do better than Mulan 2.0 without much difficult.

Disney though, focused all on pleasing China goverment and forgot the movie was supposed to be good

Even as a tv series i'd watch
There they'd be able to go Shaolin Temple and Chi shenanigans as much as they wanted
