Certainly the hip hop is there, but to me, it's a lot of the very specific r&b references - like NCT 127 made a whole Stevie Wonder throwback song, which is not surprising since they run around singing r&b music from Usher and Stevie Wonder. Specific aspects of the styles , runs, ad libs and phrasing are definitely coded, IMO, where a POC (specifically a Black person or a mixed person like me) would pick up on the references of the music we've listened to growing up or still listen to. Considering they work with so many Black songwriters and producers, this isn't surprising...

Here, for example, Doyoung, Haechan and Taeil are all providing the flourishes I'd expect out of a singer with a gospel background, which tends to shade a lot of r&b.



This song has a specific stylistic references to Al Green, Prince and more in style.

Just the opening lines here of Elevator are referencing a really specific funk-lite style in the delivery
