I don't think it has gone to court but people have been concerned with JYP before as their stans had a real holier than thou attitude when 3rd generation was still the fixture even though Twice cried on a show from exhaustion within their first year. Kpop has the bad mixture of being a shallow industry based on looks and being fast moving so if you aren't in the public eye then you are seen as fading into irrelevancy most of the time which causes strict control of idols looks to being underweight a lot of the times and overworking them which will be exacerbated by the fact they are underweight.
Definitely fair! It's making me think that, while the other big four basically have lawsuits (or other legal issues, YGE) as a company pastime, I wonder if JYPE is just better about shaking hands and letting artists walk away and keeping it out of the courts. Because, certainly, they've had their share of artists just leave.

Reading the claims, it's awful, but also as a long-time kpop fan, absolutely nothing in it is surprising to me. It's like... that's kpop for you. I remember when Eat Your Kimchi was a big English-speaking connection to kpop and they talked about these things.

I'm curious to see if filing the lawsuit in the States is likely to change the potential outcome, or if the lesson companies will take away from this is "don't debut acts directly in the States."

I find it surprising they really thought they will get away with applying such methods, as if they were in Korea. I think even there most of the things mentioned here are not exactly legal, but due to their brutal working culture and laws not being enforced in such cases, they get away with it. But to just do that in another country, with very different laws and sensibilities? They really come off as competely out of touch with reality

I'd like to agree, but considering how our entertainment system is here, the answer may be more complicated than that. There's a huge difference between what Walmart is required to pay and treat a minimum wage employee, and how a record studio is required to treat an artist under contract. JoJo fought for years to break free from a contract she signed as a minor.

so you're saying it's not much of a difference in the end..? :sadcat: I thought the court will rule in KGs favour for sure if this turns out to be all true

I'm saying I have no idea. But I wouldn't count on a singer in the States being guaranteed better treatment than a singer in Korea.

I think at the very least these things are more likely to be viewed as bad in the US compared to Korea since although we have a new-ish "hustle"/"grind" culture (which I hate and think is stupid, but that's a rant for another time) I feel like we at least tend to stand up for individuals somewhat more, and individuals are at least more likely to stand up for themselves. But still, American work culture/etc. isn't perfect at all and is way behind places like European countries. I just hope at the end of the day this warns companies against treating artists so cruelly.

As a side note, I wonder, with KG's lawsuit as well as NewJeans's, if we'll see more artists standing up against their current/former companies in the near future. I hope so!

Definitely! I could see it being like all the lawsuits from 1st/2nd gen that triggered the contract changes that most new artists get these days. Plus we've had EXO-CBX suing SME, fromis_9's complaints and then all of the members refusing to re-sign, Taeyeon making vague comments complaining about SME, and who knows what else is brewing just under the radar.

The United States isn't great on worker protections either, though, so I have no strong inclinations on how it's going to work out. It could revamp things or crush the idols or companies just learn "don't work with Americans" or any number of things.

interesting

I recall one of the things I said last week to someone else was before one signs any kpop contract as a trainee or debutee - HIRE your own bloody lawyer

"if you cannot afford a lawyer - then you cannot afford to live the next 7 years (plus traineeship) of your life under a potential slave contract"

reading more into it - this looks bad for JYPE

also why the F would one thank the executive and JP Park and the staff when literally they are the people in on it...

like let's say the things she says are true - I'm sure the staff and JP Park and the execs knew about it and failed to something about it

"the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"

I think JYP does some good cop/bad cop head games.
A lot of the people who spoke out against JYPE are positive about JYP himself (example: Jae from Day6, Bambam).

Which, to be clear, I think is likely the result of some manipulation, whereby JYP gets other people to do his dirty work for him while he pretends to be on the artists' side.

I don't trust any of the big4 founders (except for LSM since I am he and he is me - go LSM!!!)
they didn't get to where they are by playing nice

I think that is really smart though lol if one is able to get others to do one's dirty work for them

Seems like some people got their hands on the full Lawsuit document.. her full contract is appended
interesting
I really hope this turns out best for all the members.

However, sadly, the fact that the full legal documents for this case were leaked to the public isn't good for KG's side of the case.

I could see it leading to one of those dumb situations where a case gets thrown out due to lawyer misconduct.

is that a thing in the US?
like even if the courts can't find who did it can the case be thrown out?

It depends on each individual case.

Usually the judge residing over the case has to decide what records are allowed to be released to the public. Since this suit was only filed recently, I doubt we're that far yet. So it's probably a lawyer or member of the law office leaking it out to the public.

And that can get all sorts of messy.
