Both women and men can get sterilized, with men getting a vasectomy and women having their tubes tied. However, oftentimes doctors deny the procedure for women, citing reasons such as potential regret in the future, and oftentimes they want the husband to confirm that they want the procedure done. They may also refuse if the woman is childless, if she is under 30, ect. With some insurances, they require a month wait between signing off that you want it and the procedure. Comparatively, vasectomies are much easier to do and are almost never declined, and rarely are they asked about their partners desires.

I think this is a bit ridiculous. Women are capable of making their own decisions, yet they are often asked about what other people want rather than what they want. I'm of the opinion that you should be able to choose what you want to do with your life, and if you don't want kids that's fine. The decision doesn't need judgement. No matter the gender, I think they should respect the persons wishes.

Well that's just stupid... let people do what they want whether they regret it later or not is not on the doctor or the partner. Same with abortions and anything else that is directly decided by a person.

the double standards are definitely ridiculous. people should be allowed to do what they want with their own bodies and make their own choices, with their bodies and their lives, without judgement or denial/different treatment on the basis of gender. periodt.

I mean... If the the person who wants to get sterilized is married or in a long term relationship, then I think the partner should be asked no matter the gender. Not to deny the one getting sterilized, but to refer them to marriage councelling if one of the partners is categorically against it!

Because if you are in a long term relationship, these things should be discussed EXTENSIVELY with the partner. Bcs it CAN be a deal breaking thing.

That would be reasonable, I would hope that they had that talk before. Either way I think it should be done for both males and females, not just one.

Definitely the gender discrepancy should be done away with yeah.

But I approve of asking the partner, bcs this WILL also heavily influence the partners life.

asking the husband to confirm is ridiculous, a husband isn't your owner or parent or something, women are capable of making their own well-informed discussions :((

I think its BS. I get it if the one wanting is very young, and in general too confirming they are making informed and thoughtout decision. But its womans own choice to make.

There is some issues with having to confirm the partner/husband. For example religious groups or abusive relationships. There is actually huge religious group in my country which thinks all birth control is sin, but its actually really bad for womans bodies who usually end up getting 10+ kids.

I think one of the reason why male vacestomy are more common to be signed off be of the ease of the surgery and the fact that vacestomy are reversible.
Female sterilastion can be reversed at a higher risk rate and no guarantee of fertility its almost a pointless reversal surgery.
It well known that males can produce sperm well into their older ages..
As for women we only have a specific time frame in which to have children naturally.
I feel that more importance is placed on having your tubes tied and its more likely permenantly for us then it is for males, you have to be sure and close to 100% as you can, much like if you were to have an abortion.. Its not a light decision even for those that have to sterilise due is medical issues. I feel that its one of those things that do define our women hood biologically, whenever or not we want to have children, it's just having that choice, having your tubes tied is Really big step in that regard and can't be easily changed (successfully) so It should be treated differently, because it maybe a similar procedure but it has an enitrely different outcome dealing with biology make ups and emotional aftercare (also the side effects of having your tubes tied are quite bad). Alot of the hoop jumping for female sterilisation is also liability for the place who is performing the procedure, if the patient isn't 100% sure, they can be liable and sued.
Im not sure in regards to having a husband sign off in it... I don't think that's a general stituation however if in certain context that may be applicable to some scenarios, however it shouldn't be a general thing to have to do, Ive never heard of that before tbh.

I've found personally alot of women do tend to change there mind about children after the 30 make usually when their careers are stable, it's kinda like a biological ticking time bomb, by that point you either want kids or you dont, plus things start decline for most of us at that point so it's short window.
But It makes sense why many would refuse sterilisation to those younger than 30.

My mom had two kids and did not want to have anymore but her doctor tried to convince that she was too young to get it done and she may want more kids. I could possibly understand a doctor cautioning a woman with no children but with women who already have kids its ridiculous!

Wanting a partner's permission is also just disgusting because women aren't their husbands property and you have no idea if the relationship is abusive or not.

Read until the end in order to understand my thoughts and don't jump to conclusions before you do.

The concept of confirmation wouldn't be appropriate in the sense of getting consent from your husband or wife. However, it is not unreasonable that you tell your spouse that you are thinking or going to have it done as it would impact both parties especially if children are wanted by one spouse and none have been had. Its similar to a couple continuing to have sex and the wife stopping birth control without discussing having children with her partner or a husband replacing his wife's birth control pills with a similar looking vitamin c tablet.

The insurance company should require a wait time as both vasectomies and tubal ligation cost a ton of fu**g money and insurance will not cover reversal surgeries if one changes their mind at a later time and reversal surgeries are not cheap.

A tubal ligation is often more expensive (given the rigorousness of the procedure) and that may factor in the need for a extended consideration. And with any elective procedure, there should be a cost-benefit analysis period for which the patient can consider the risks and benefits of the procedure. Within the next 2-3 years, I will be put under to install a medical device in my arm (and while necessary, is still elective) and I would want a window of time to consider the potential risks to my quality of life and recovery time before gaining approval from my physician.

Aren't there more long term health issues that can stem from getting for tubes tied at a young age though? I'm only saying this because I've heard a trans dude talk about it on YouTube before... obviously trans men have to have that procedure before they can have their bottom surgery.

True but at the same time vasectomies don't have a wait time like getting tubes tied does. And if confirmation is needed for females imo it should be needed for males.

I believe that there is a bigger risk of failure and ectopic pregnancies with certain types of sterilizations when done younger. However, my issue is that is not the reason given to them. If the doctors let the women know the situation and what the risks are that would be one thing; giving the reasons stated above as the reason for not allowing it is a different story.

the double standard here makes no sense. everyone should be allowed to decide what they want to happen to them. their own body - their own choice
