I have a similar storyNot biggest but just one that comes to mind. When I was young I learned English pretty late (entering kindergarten I still wasnt speaking fully in english and I was writing in a mixture of alphabets, half a year prior to entering I spoke so little english that I needed a certain gymnastics coach because he spoke Russian). By 2nd grade I was reading chapter books pretty quickly. My best friend for most of schooling said that her first major memory of me was her being surprised and jealous because we checked out books at the same time (me a chapter and her a picture book) and returned them at the same time. Will this matter at all? No. But I like to see that I wasn't always hopeless at languages because Im not great with them now![]()
when I first got to australia I was almost 7 so I was suppose to start year 1 but I didn't speak a word of English other than gameboy lol (my mother bought me the newest GREY gameboy in 1991). Obviously I couldn't keep up so the principal said to my parents that i had to go to a dedicated language school 2 buses away. Now my parents obviously didn't want me to travel such long distances since I COULDN'T speak English...so they mde a deal with the principal that I had to learn English within 3 months otherwise they had no choice but to send me to the language school.
So instead of normal classes what my principal did was pull me out of them and teach me English using flash cards almost everyday and at night my parents would help me - I learned English within a month!!!!
To this day I still remember that principal's name - Mr Henderson - years later I tried to seek him out but he had already past away
