it should be a given. if u live in a foreign country, you should learn the language.

Aside from financial reasons the main reason why I wouldn't want to live in Japan for a while atm: I need to learn Japanese first (at least speaking and reading Japanese). Even Business English will only work to a certain degree and I want to be able to talk to any Japanese person. Talking to someone using a phrase book is just ridiculous and unfriendly.

I would love moving to Scandinavia but their languages are confusing

As someone who lives in a Nordic country, I don't find it that necessary to learn a Scandinavian language because of the fact that most Scandinavians are very good at English.
Even though I don't mind seeing people trying to learn my country's native language.

When I travel to Denmark, I do speak Danish, when I'm there because of the fact that I'm fluent in it.


I think most Scandinavian languages seem easy to learn because of their similarity to English.

I know people who were born and lived their whole lives in a country and weren’t very good at the official language and I didn’t see it as a major issue. It’s reasonable and maybe expected to know some basic words and phrases but I don’t see why people struggling to learn a language as adults should be crucified for not knowing a whole ton of words, especially when they moved recently and/or without much planning, such as refugees. Languages are hard, especially when older, and besides, some countries don’t have official languages such as the US. You can make an argument that they should learn the most common language in the US but even then I think it’s fine not to speak a language well when you live on a foreign country

I mean I’ve encountered some Asian elderlies that don’t seem to speak and understand any English despite them living in Australia. And as someone who is Asian but doesn’t speak nor understand their language, it annoys me how they don’t seem to bother to learn English at all even if it’s at a basic level, idk.

If you’ve been there for a while yeah it’s odd to not know how to say super basic things, but it’s more on them and more inconvenient for them than any of the people in they country that speak the typically used language in that country imo. But one user here has said that one of their parents is one of those “speak English or get out” Americans but they lived in a foreign country for some time and the parent in question made almost no effort to learn the official language of that country. And I think many people are like that in actuality. They get mad at immigrants for “not putting in the work” but in the immigrants position they’d put just as much or less work because it’s undeniably hard to learn languages aside from kids really. It’s not like you read a short book about the language and are now fluent, but some people act like it is that easy.

People who doesn’t make any effort to learn the language of their living country. I mean if you move to a foreign country.

Would you make the effort to learn the language?

I find that so disrespectful to live somewhere for smth like 20 years and not being able to say a single sentence in their language.​

I can understand if you don’t wanna learn it

but the least you can do is learn to speak the basics so you can make easy conversation

i would learn the language. even if i'm not fluent, ig basic conversation would suffice.

Yes, how are you going to live there? How do you function, so many things you miss out on like interactions! My sister doesn't know Korean and whenever we visit she is always scolded by my 할머니 ( grandma), and my 할아버지 ( grandpa), they always say its disrespectful and wrong to not know a language of a country you visit often. In SK I have run into english speakers while helping my mom at my grandparents market who assume we don't speak english and luckily I'm the translater( along with my sister) and I of coursed asked if this was her first time here and she had been living in SK for 10 years already!! the lady didn't even know how to say thank you
