What should you know after studying a language for two years.

I ask this because I have this, lets say, acquaintance who studied Spanish for two years in school and only retained basic introductions and pleasantries (i.e. My name is... How are you... etc)...

I personally don’t think there’s a certain amount that should be known in say two or even five years of time since everyone learns at different paces.
