Wait, I have Iron Widow but haven't read it. What don't you like about it?

I do not see the purpose in “reclaiming” sexist narratives by wrapping it under a woke candy wrapper

wu zetian was neither an extraordinary leader nor an incompetent one, and her legacy was greatly tainted by the tales propagated written scholars after her death of her treachery, which tbh should be expected at any rate, and most notably her supposed personal sexual promiscuity which is rather unique as a point of criticism for emperors (for obvious reasons)

making her bi and poly girlboss does nothing to really examine or recontextualize her as a historical figure and just furthers that narrative that she literally had nothing to do with

I also strongly dislike when feminist literature/film/television presumes that contemporary feminism can be hamfisted into any context as they so wish to make it woke

feminism and our modern understanding of it happened over time and while the idea that women should have equal rights isn’t necessarily new, many of the frameworks and arguments, language and understanding of it are; it’s why I could not stand when life gives you tangerines the same way I cannot take barbie seriously — when you advertise on feminism it needs to at least make an attempt towards historical sense and add real nuance to the topic beyond the second wave feminism talking points shoved into the story and presented as these groundbreaking progressive ideals

tldr the intent was nice but the actual execution was sloppy imho, there’s better sci fi and fantasy out there set in china
