Defend yourself to get away is my policy. So, if there's no alternative and the only thing you can do is engage, engage. That also means don't fight words with fists, don't fight a slap with fists. Your reaction/defense can't be greater than the offense. And also to be considered is nothing comes from nowhere. Have you exhausted all means of intervention prior to it getting to the point of a fight? Is school staff not assisting? Are parents not doing anything? Has any higher authority been alerted? If the system where you are isn't trash, this can sometimes be nipped in the bud or avoided.

Intervening on someone's behalf? You'll have seconds to decide if that's more appropriate than getting an authority figure to intervene, but sometimes someone stepping up is enough to make some people stand down.

Is pride/ego the reason for the fight? Not letting someone "punk" you or being embarrassed? Because that's not a reason to engage, tbh.

You need to consider that people these days are different. Your beating someone down (regardless of a reason) can turn into a school shooting, school stabbing, family (grown people, in the case of minor schooling) coming to "assist" their loved one that you "defeated," and so on. I live somewhere where while school shootings like "the stories" aren't the norm, gang violence is (they just classify them differently since it's not someone coming to intentionally shoot up a school as much as gang retaliation type stuff). It's sadly not completely unheard of for parents or other family to roll up on a school and fight kids, etc. So, there are other factors to consider.

Last thing I wanted to mention, also, is that people, kids and adults, are very like pack animals. It's rarely gonna be a one-on-one thing, whether you're the intended target or stepping in for someone else (which invites more people). One-on-one honor fights from the past are gone. You're more likely to get ganged up on and stomped or something in most places. So, if you engage, know that's a possibility and know that help can be a long time coming... especially since most places don't want anyone, teachers or officers, being hands-on with violent students, and teachers esp. have been told to be hands-off on students, so you are just gonna be getting beat.

TLDR: My opinion is don't FAFO and defend yourself if your life is in danger.

we probably live in different areas of the world..
Honestly, its irrelevant. Your actions define who you are. Don't lower yourself to their level. I grew up a stone's throw from the Bronx. Not in a castle. I've faced this situation many many times in my youth. That being said, I understand your situation and I sympathize with you. Be strong mentally, not physically! Peace!

Well ig it depends really bc brain >>> brawn is not really true in a lot of situations. If someone is stronger, faster, and more skilled in fighting than you. If someone has weapons. You think words are gonna stop them? Someone is picking you up, pinning you down, you can’t move, being smarter than them is gonna help then? Nah

someone can seriously injure you and even leave you paralyzed if you do nothing and they’re hitting continuously and will NOT stop, not just one hit and if you don’t retaliate to the aggression they quit

A lot of the time if it could actually be avoided, not avoiding it is not an honor thing or a brave thing, it’s an ego thing. Like Marty mcfly being called “chicken” in back to the future. You got nothing to prove tho, their words won’t make it true

I guess I thought more in terms of real world violence than petty fights

Aside from harmless schoolyard scuffles in my childhood I never was in a fight, because you can't quarrel with me. I just go away.

It also worked great in the past to start talking about something completely different. I once was in a situation where a younger man try to start fighting with me because I allegedly took away 'his' parking lot. While he got more and more upset I just looked at his car. At one point he stopped aprubtly because he noticed that I didn't care about him. That was the moment when I said: "That's a really nice car! I like it!". The situation suddenly was completely relaxed. He showed me his car and said: "Maybe I was too harsh. You're welcome. Have a nice day!"

Most people are pigeonholing: When they say something or do something, another person need to act in a special way. If you act completely different than expected you can blindside people perfectly without using physical force. Having said that, there seem to be people (I've never met such person yet) that just enjoy dominating and hurting other people. Bullies. In this case I wouldn't have a problem giving an attacker a taste of his own medicine. I've trained Krav Maga for 10 years. Learn to defend yourself - just in case. Another option would be a good pepper spray and the correct use of it (you should train this too). Just getting into a fight without being prepared can be dangerous nowaydays, because you could get from a fist fight in a knife fight quite suddenly.

Better learn rhetorical strategies to relieve a dangerous situation, train to defend yourself and have a good pepper spray with you. It's always good to have options. But in most cases there's no need to use physical violence. A fight mostly started when things already escalated. Don't let a situation escalate.

If you have to fight(meaning they threw the first punch), you might as well make it worth you while and have some fun.

I definitely don’t like physical fights, in a case of if someone hits me first I’d defend myself as much as possible.
