What's your opinion on smartphones at the dinner/lunch/breakfast table? (3 Viewers)

A recent discussion on the other forum I go on.

To me, mealtime is a time for family and togetherness, and of course enjoying Mama's spinach quiche (for example). The only time you should use your phone at meals is to look something up real quick or pull up a pic to show.

I don't see an issue with it, I'm American so it's not viewed as much as a time of togetherness that the older generation or other cultures would view it.

it doesnt matter to me as long as theyre not ignoring others/me while talking
i can understand why people consider it rude but i feel like they need to understand certain situations like my own where im typically responding to my boyfriend who i'm in a distanced relationship with; i don't often get on my phone for other reasons at the table

i dont care about it– if im with friends then ill try not to use it so I can talk to them. but when I'm with people I live with idc because we see each other every day and talk outside of just the dinnertable

The only reason i dont use my phone while eating is so as to not drop it in my soup or otherwise get it dirty by dropping food/drink on it. If its between courses or sth, like waiting for food to be served-i see no problem with using my phone unless im with older generation who prefer you talk n pay attention at the dinner table.

I probably dont take out my phone much at dinner table unless im bored, or eating alone-& the food isnt gonna mess up my phone.

If you want to use ur phone while eating with me im usually fine with it, my niece n nephews probably do it the most n it saves me from thinking of topics of conversation to keep them engaged. Teenagers! I'll talk to them whenever they want me to; i usedta be their favorite uncle before i got too boring for them. I dint change, they did n i dint change to keep pace with their growing into teenagers. Oh well.

when i'm eating out with my friends then i'm not using it so we can talk but at home we never eat together so i always use my phone or watch tv while eating

I prefer not to use it if I'm eating with other people, whether at home or outdoors.
Outdoors is pretty easy to explain since I'd rather focus on the people I'm with and have a good time.

At home, unless I eat alone, I just don't like using my phone during meals, I usually just tell people I'll be back after eating- it doesn't take too long and I can go a few minutes without it.

I don't really eat with others a lot. When I am eating with family at like holidays I won't have my phone out... Although maybe I should because some of the younger generation have bad eating habits that I'd rather not see...

If eating in a restaurant with others, I find it extremely tactless to do.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that my family history in the US is far more limited than most Americans. lol

Actually I come from Asia where so much value is given to meal-time togetherness but even here, people have became so addicted to electronics that they will use it while eating lol.
I wish I would be less addicted and eat the food more mindfully regardless of how I am eating with other people or alone.

Yeah I don't use mine when eating with family or with friends, it just always been rude to me. If I'm eating with someone I want them to be present or else it feels like a waste of time especially since I don't do out to eat with friends alot and when I do I actually want to engage with them, not a blank shells.

I think Im more family orientated around meal time specifically dinner, as I didn't grow up in good family... So It means so much more just to sit together for a small amount of time to talk and eat.

I think if you're eating with someone then you shouldn't be on your phone all the time as that is rather pointless as you're literally just eating together and that's it when you really should be talking to each other and having a meal together is more so a means to an end to do that.

I don't mind phones at the table if I'm eating alone, but with other people, I try to keep it to a minimum if they're not on their phone
