Granted I live in a very not city like area. But I’ve never felt the need to carry a weapon in any city I’ve been to either. Granted in the US I’ve only been alone in cities like NYC and Newark, not so much cities known for danger (though Newark may be close).
I been followed a few times and recently during a morning run. It was very scary.
Been carrying pepper spray and keys are a default weapon but thinking about getting something more stabby and inconspicuous.
It's safe here. But when I leave the house, I almost always carry a walking stick because of problems with my left middle ear. It's nothing dangerous, but it happens that I suddenly feel dizzy. Then it's good to have a third leg.
I don't carry a pharmacy (CVS) cane. I have some genuine Irish Blackthorn sticks (I bought them in Ireland).
People often call them 'Shillelaghs', although it's not the correct term. Historically Shillelaghs were short Blackthorn cudgels, used in Irish faction fights (anyone watched 'Gangs of New York'?). Those sticks were absolutely devastating in skilled hands, so Great Britain banned those weapons when they took control over Irish lands. But the Irish weren't stupid: they lengthened their 'Shillelaghs' and used them as legal walking sticks.
I learned Kali stick fighting in my younger years and I still practice stick fighting drills with a boxing dummy every now and then. I know how to use a stick for self defence - if need be!
