In the US, I think it's a term used to describe NBA [ professional basketball ] and NFL [ professional football ( not soccer ) ] games being played on certain days.

For example ~ When announcers say something to the effect on TV of, "It's game day here......."
Or when athletes get excited and say on TV something like, "I'm ready for game day!!!" "It's game day, baby!!!"

I don't watch sports, but, I'm almost 100% sure.
