Positive or negative!

I was listening to both Secret and Purple Kiss today, and very different sounds, but both groups are known for having a core concept that sometimes they stray away from. But I think Secret being a second gen group where being a concept queen was considered a good thing made it easier for fans to follow them from Madonna to Shy Boy. (For context, outside of their debut, every song they ever released hit top 15, most in the top 5.) I think the same singles list for Secret released in 2020 later would have had a very different trajectory for the group.

I may be thinking too much in terms of political or social climate and such, but some that come to mind are:

BAP-For the time, their debut was unique and stood out, it would do this less if it was another time
X1-If they debuted longer before the scandal they'd have more time to get a fanbase and maybe prevent the disbandment (like IZONE)
BTS-They filled a niche left behind by BAPs lawsuit, if it was at another time the market may have been lower for their earlier songs
Seventeen-Stood out for having a cute concept, which was different at the time. May have benefited though if they debuted when Pledis was in better shape
Monsta X-the international audience was large. If they debuted before kpop became international, they’d have to depend on domestic and maybe Japanese markets
WayV-debuted during high tensions with South Korea and China. In another age, maybe they could have openly promoted as part of NCT, but at the time they couldn’t
Shinee-same about being different for the time and thus standing out
Any earlier group from a major company-they’d have the reputation of the company, which could help

There’s way more that fit these reasons too, the social or political climate changes a lot for these things. These were just some I thought of

I think most if not all 2nd gen groups would have a different trajectory if they debuted nowadays. Like you mentioned, a lot of fans appreciated different concepts more back then and not so much now

i wish CSR debuted before the christian horse girl stuff went out of style, but i'm happy that at least someone is still doing chg

badvillain and babymonster would do wayyyyy better if they debuted earlier imo, the girl crush overload still has its grip on us all

nmixx probably should have debuted earlier when everyone was being assaulted by the onslaught of girl crush, then they might be popular for being different. but because they debuted when everyone was different and fresh and new, their brand of different was easier to hate
