That's exactly it. Having tiny shards of lead (a metal) floating around near sensitive computer equipment causes issues.

Same reason that astronauts have to be very careful about where they clean themselves, because bits of dead skin and hair floating aimlessly can cause the same issues.

According to a Neil DeGrasse Tyson YT short, the US only went in the first place because they wanted to beat the Russians there.
