Just wondering, because making MV is so expensive, yet SM throwing MV like i throwing my unpaid bill.

Because it's a way to let their artist explore more musical horizon that they couldn't with the direction and concept that their groups take
it's also a way for their artist to collabore with other artist
and SM also use it as a way to promote artist of their fillial as the artist of Mystic ent etc....

I thought initially that it was a way for SM to 'get better' in the digital market.

That is clearly not what they want to do.

I cannot begin to think they are anywhere close to break even. In fact i would put them millions in the red each year unless the tiny amount of DL and Streams is far more lucrative that otherwise has been documented.

Almost no one has had success with a song on station, and there have been powerhouse combos.

And in most cases the music is super niche.

To let them explore new musical genres and appeal more to people who have musical interests in different genres of music other than pop? I cant see any current sm groups releasing this song for example, but they still tried it for a station.

it allows sm artists to release songs without it being official and be experimental with their songs. its not for money or anything.

like for example here for both mvs amber shot the video, choreographed the dance, and even produced the some of the music. sm dont want it to be like an official fx thing. mostly rejected projects go into sm station (not public friendly) or collabs with other ents. its generally for the fandom/sm stans than the public.
