Why some groups like SHINee doesn't sale nearly as much as other big groups ? (1 Viewer)

Well for starters Iz*One having high sales is because of their fanbase being massive like you think 500k everyday Koreans were buying their albums? Secondly Empty and Really Really were both hits for Winner and My Type and Love Scenario were both hits for iKON so they do meet one of your categories.

Obviously Izone has large sales because they have a large fan base, that’s what I was saying. I don’t get the impression Empty or My Type were hits, just somewhat popular. Not to mention if a group has a big debut that means little about their status many years later. If anything it seems more likely people were hyped for their debut because they got into the groups and members but ended up not staying such big fans. Either that or they randomly write 2 popular debut songs then took a break on that for a while and wrote another single popular song later. That won’t sell albums that well either which is what this thread is really about anyways. It’s also unlikely to make me consider them a “big” group if they had 2 songs that were popular and nothing else.

Empty and My Type both got over 1.5M downloads so you cannot argue they aren't hits and I'll just say you're wrong not to consider them big groups as someone who actively followed album sales, digital sales and knows what are considered good metrics of success.

Generally a group that has had digital success and has built a sustainable fanbase from it with the sustainable fanbase being the part that excludes groups like Crayon Pop and Momoland due to them not having a strong fanbase even after their digital success however where I might differ more from you is that I don't consider a high success group the same as a top group so iKON is not in the same tier as BTS or Seventeen the same way that a girl group like Itzy isn't the same level as Ive or Blackpink but still separating them from groups like Loona who just have decent physicals.

I never got the impression Empty was majorly big, nor that they kept that momentum going aside from Really Really. After all having a big debut isn’t the same as having a big fan base. Maybe my idea of a big group is different from yours but to me Winner was definitely not a big group internationally and probably not a big group by my definition of a big group in Korea either. Ikon I don’t see it either, if they charted okay that’s great but unlikely to mean they have a hardcore dedicated fan base which is what matters if you’re talking albums which is what you’re doing.

I wouldn’t view ikon and winner as popular among the gp aside from one, maybe 2 songs, but either way lots of groups are like that, especially girl groups (mostly before 4th gen). Different markets looking for different things. Sometimes people don’t want to dedicate themselves to listening to all the music and variety from some groups, whether it’s not having time, not liking enough of their other music, it could be so many things. Hard to say why for the majority of people because many have such differing reasons for it.

I’d put them at separate levels too probably. Not necessarily called mid though. I’m guessing you’re using 3 or 4 levels which I don’t really do but I’m also less serious about it because stuff like that matters little to me.

I use 5 as I believe it gives the most accurate idea without spreading false ideas which I personally am not into
