So I was wondering, you call someone sunbaenim based on if they debuted before you in Kpop.

But how does it go for people like Wonyoung who debuted twice? As most probably now, back when she was a toddler she debuted with IZ*one 5 years ago and now again with IVE one year ago.

Based on her original debut date, she is pretty much sunbaenim to almost everyone from 4th gen, based on the second only to the newest groups, so which is true?

Similar problem with Gfriend/Viviz. That prompted this scene in Queendom 2:

Now the scene is mostly for comedy, but I think it boils down to the respect given to the first debut.

ok I see, that makes sense though!

So a followup question, when someone now adresses IVE, that has to be quite difficult as they can't disresepct Wony and Yujin as their seniors, but the rest of the group are probably not sunbae to them, so how does one go about it?

Yes, definitely for comedy. SinB and Yeorum are close friends, so they were teasing each other. It's also Mnet, so they edited it to make the most drama.

As for IVE, it depends. Addressing the group as a whole would probably default them down to being hoobaes. (for example, Everglow wouldn't need to say IVE-sunbaenim). But an individual member of Everglow might address Wonyoung as sunbaenim.

It really depends on what feels proper at the time though. So probably a case by case basis.

Ha, I've thought a lot about honorifics that Asian culture has so much of. I don't think debuting as a toddler is enough. Given Wonyoung's experience I think in quite a few situations she would qualify as a sunbaenim even if she's younger than you and IVE debut after them. In Japanese class they bash honorifics in your brain like crazy. I always did extremely poorly on those tests. I think I'm to American in my brain to adjust to a system like that.

I thought taking the word "unnie" away from Eunchae in LSFM was the most hilarious thing in the world because it practically gave the girl a nervous breakdown.

Going as far back as 2014, irene (RV) is born mths before seohyun (SNSD), so im numb to wonyoung n yujin's sunbae status in regards to their izone/IVE debuts.
