This is what I'm expecting to happen with the casting in the next Harry Potter tv show or movie.

the problem is that ppl call you racist the moment you are against it, which is bullshit.
for example, netflix made cleopatra black. even black ppl laugh about it.
and cleopatra was a documentary too, so wtf was netflix thinking? they should have used an egytian actress.
in general, I think if the characters of a story has a certain 'race', you should use it in the movie/series too.
if its open to ones imagination, be free to use whatever. simple as that.

not that it matter more than making some social point. Hispanic make the least sense over all the UK is >80 % ~ 10% is Asian Hispanic did not even have a break out in teh numbers i saw from the govermnent.

and that aside... while i don't particularly care about the ethnicities of the characters being non-white, an asian hermione specifically wouldn't really sit right with me, as i think it would perpetuate the "asian = nerd" stereotype (i say this as an asian myself, south asian to be precise)

yeah, hermione was - especially in a book-smart way. topped all her classes, studied tough subjects, spent a lot of time in the library, etc etc. and yeah, this especially would perpetuate the stereotype, sure, academically speaking many asians do do well, sometimes are seen as overachievers, and there can be a LOT of parental pressure on kids to do well academically. but in western media that often is pretty much the only way we're represented - which sucks. additionally, asians are also stereotyped as entering professions such as medicine. and guess what hermione's muggle parents do for a living? yup, they're dentists...

Is the fact that the author picked Britain such a major necessary part of the story where everything will fall apart if their accent doesn't match? If it was historical or their British identity was a major part of it and it wouldn't make sense without a British accent maybe but if it's about a fantasy world where the accent really doesn't change the storyline in any way shape or form I fail to understand why that inconsistency would matter.

honestly I find it annoying when companies try to do remakes or live versions and hire poc for them, the attempt at inclusion comes across as superficial (ahem disney), sure if they did it wouldn't be a big deal and even better if it's not just an attempt at trying to be diverse, in that case I think it would be better for companies to put more effort into creating original stories. as a poc myself, I'm all for representation and Harry Potter is a fantasy story so it doesn't really matter what the casting choices are, but in general I've always been skeptical when companies try to pull things like this with remakes and people will call you racist if you disagree with the choices made, just create original stories if you want to be inclusive :")
