Would you say you stanned a group if you didn't like their music? (1 Viewer)

I saw a reddit post where the OP was ranking groups for what percentage of their music they liked and starred the groups they stanned, and there was a mismatch in that, almost none of the groups whose music they liked 100% of, did they list themselves as stanning.

So it got me curious on KPS's thoughts on the same situation.

For me personally, if I like none of the group's music, I might be fond of the members or wish the group well, but I wouldn't call myself a stan.

And on the flip side, if I like 100% of the group's music, then they would be one of my favorite groups. I don't understand how someone could like literally everything a group releases. but then not call themselves a fan. Like, at some point you are?? I didn't call myself an NSWER for a while, but after a couple years of NMIXX consistently topping my Spotify wrapped, I had to be like, oh, I guess I do like most of their music.

Music is always first for me.

Seventeen was the only group I got into because of their show, Going Seventeen.
But even when I started listening to their music, I love a majority it.
Like, I'd get mad when they would drop a new song on youtube but not their streaming platforms. Those songs would always be one of my top favs too. I'm still waiting for Scoups "Me" to have a digital release.

So I dont think I'd stan a whole group based off anything other than music.
I would stan individuals tho, like Johnny

I barely have the energy to stan groups I love the music of, let alone ones I don’t I love a lot of the music of every group I stan, but there are some groups I love the music of that I wouldn’t consider myself a stan of. But tbh I don’t see an issue with people stanning groups they don’t vibe with musically because some kpop fans put such a strong emphasis on needing to follow every aspect of a group, including variety, in order to be a “real stan”. And at that point, if you are a fan who sees that stuff as a requirement, I could totally see someone stanning a group they don’t vibe with musically but vibe with in variety and such. The definition of stan just varies widely from person to person.

That's fair!! It's just, especially now with how fragmented the industry is, I can't imagine going out of my way to follow the contents of a group whose music I didn't even like lol. It was different in second and third gen, I think, where you could be watching a show because your fave is on it, and there was cross-over with other artists or there were a lot more hosting gigs where you could see how funny or charming certain members were. Now it's like every group has their own content, so if you want to see BDC, you have to go watch their personal variety show, you wouldn't come across them from watching something with SuperM in it. (Unless you count dance challenges, which I don't think anyone really does...)

I differ in tat I like almost ALL Beatles song I hv heard/listened to but I still wouldn't rlly call myself a fan(they're just ubiquitous, like r u a fan of breathing or Air? Drinking? Of Water?). Almost same with other famous artists/songs from before I was born/actively following/searching for music from my faves: I think I've mentioned I like, really like Suzanne Vega, R.E.M, Tori Amos, n other indie/alternative bands/singer~songwriters/musicians including Indigo girls, Nirvana(2nd album mostly/only), n maybe a few others from the 90s n a few from 2000s/2010s; some I was a fan for a whilst like John Legend(he even came n performed at a concert in S.E.A. before he rlly blew up to be a MEGASTAR!!! I stopped following/searching for his stuff later on but not becos of him; I just got rlly burnt out/busy/tired from/at work n got into 2 others: Rachael Yamagata & Vienna Teng(both of whom also came halfway across the world to perform here in S.E.A - I was a fan of the 2nd before she came to perform but the 1st I just decided/felt I would like her stuff; don't rmbr how/why I felt/thought so - maybe I tried listening at HMV CD-listening station; like streaming but u had to be at a physical place LOL. Ancient times. Anyways I think I'm a fan of less than 10 or a dozen western artists n only 10 stan grps in kpop.

there are ofc many songs I like but not always meaning I'm a fan of the artist/musician/band. In kpop I feel it differently as the cycle of promoting/releasing new music every few mths/multiple times per yr/regular releases before 7 yr contract is up engages/makes ppl(me) more invested/engaged n supportive/hoping for success or at least not flopping too badly re: our faves(or even casual likes).

I mean for ITZY, n maybe NMIXX I want them to succeed or at least not flop too badly even tho I don't stan 'em. Same for BM, MEOVV, H2H, n maybe others I'm not bringing to mind rn.

Non kpop I hvnt been lured/caught my ear by anyone in a long time. Maybe I'm just different since I don't vibe w/mainstream or popular artists/acts as much. Paul Simon n Sting(solo) [oh also Paul McCartney solo but only 1 album] <also mentioned above R.E.M n Nirvana's last album, after release before the tragedy I think but can't rmbr it was forever ago> maybe most popular artists/acts I actually call myself a fan of but only for awhile. I might still call myself a fan but only of tat era.

tldr idk how to summarise my point/anything above LOL (i freely admit some snobbishness/elitist ignoring/not mentioning some bands/acts/songs I was a fan of but don't want to admit/acknowledge without embarrasent/guilty pleasure or Sins of youth/youthful innocence/lack of sophistication) 😆

If I don’t like most of their discography then I don’t see the point in calling myself a stan.

I do solo stan some idols just because I like them, even if I don’t like their group’s music that much. Like Jihyo and Mina for example

There are groups that have a few good songs and there are the groups I stan. When I stan a group, I like most songs of their discography. When a group change their style fundamentally, I still listen to their old songs but I stop stanning them. That said, I'm ready to go back into 'stan mode' anytime.

no way lol they're musicians not my friends. i may find some artists more likeable than others but if i don't like their music i won't call myself a fan because there's no point in that imo

Music is priority number one. Honestly performance is a important too. Watching live stages is one of the best parts of kpop

No, I am picky with artists as it is. I will let it be known if I like a song by someone, but I cannot count myself as a fan for liking just one song or a few songs of a group if that is all I like. This is a personal thing applied only to myself. But for me personally I will only say I stan a group or am a fan if I start spending money on them in one way or another.

But about what you said, if they like every single release, it means they are actively investing their time to check them out and following them, which to me = fan trait.

Yeah, there have been dance challenges that I like with groups I don’t follow but I can’t imagine there’s lots of people getting hooked onto a new group just from that

Naw i need to like a preponderance of the music and buy it to even consider myself a stan.
There are many many group where i like some music or really like some members but i might not even be a fan.
