Yeah in high school we covered stuff like Indus Valley civilizations and first civilizations in China, but only in AP world history. People who didn’t take AP world history wouldn’t have learned about it at all.

Yeah I find that weird that that isn't in ancient history. In NSW we have ancient and modern history high school course (no Australian history weirdly enough)

In my state we just had to take a world history class and an American history class. But they don’t say how long the classes needs to be, so I ended up with 3 full years of world history and 7 weeks of US history (which only covered 1920-present). But it counted What I did was really uncommon though.

Also this inspires me to go back and take out those Renaissance snobs that ruined English spelling because “oooh look this Latin root had a letter that we don’t pronounce anymore so we should add it in as decoration”

It happened with Ancient Greek as well, hence 'ph.' I wonder if the great vowel shift happened because of classism or not actually

Tbh, given the time period, it probably played a role Who in Europe wasnt trying to distinguish themselves socially then? But it’s an interesting question, I never really considered class differences in relation to the great vowel shift.

It is really interesting, and the history of the time in general really adds to it also. So much stuff was changing in England that would cause societal changes. Just before, up to 1/2 of the population is wiped out from the Black Death, then changes in regime and religious upheaval and chaos, and by the end they’re starting to make colonies. All while the renaissance and love of classical Latin and Greek happens in Europe, and affects everyone’s languages, and while the printing press gets big and changes spelling of various languages. And in the meantime they still find time to wage 100 wars with France. No wonder it’s hard for the scholars to track the reasons for the great vowel shift
