It is a lot harder to learn about cultural identity on your own. Usually family guides children and show them traditions but not everyone has that and have to learn on their own at a much later age. Personally for me, I know I have Ukrainian ancestry but that’s about it (and didn’t know that growing up). I cannot speak on the second part very much as I’m not a POC but I will say that it is unfair to stereotype and classify people to fit and agenda. Don’t understand why people do that. Let people embrace the culture they know if they choose to do so. Not everyone is gonna fit this visual standard

I know about some of my ancestry, that I didn't know about growing up. And alot of people in my life, adults in my life, had tried to dismiss that part about me, have tried to invalidate it.

I mean, I live with them, so they dictate everything I do. Even so they like to invalidate my feelings, and likes a lot as well.

Just the other day, I had received a sticker of an anime character I really liked, and was really excited to put it on my phone, and was shamed for it.

Because they deemed it 'childish'.

But it was really weird, the way she went about it.

She kept asking me when I was going to 'grow up' As if I havent only been in her care for four months.

And when she saw how upset I was at her for saying those things and arguing with me over fucking stickers, she told me "You can put it on there if you want, I just think you should grow up. It's sad how upset you get over people's words"

So, my thing is. If she knew i was going to react like that, why say it? Not even just say it, why are you shaming me repeatedly over some stickers. Makes no sense, and last time I checked, stickers didn't have an age limit.

Nobody walks around in their everyday life wearing traditional clothing or speak the native language where I’m from. I didn’t have a lot of cultural exposure or influence in my childhood, (and that’s what it’s like for most or all of the people) and I didn’t know a lot at all until my early teen age years,
Its unfortunate really that our culture isn’t celebrated or taught enough. I think the fact that the country was ruled by another for so long is the reason why our culture is presently like this. For example, so many people were forced to speak English and it was continued down the generations it became the national language, while the native is now slowly dying out.
So no, my culture like clothing, traditions, etc isn’t really a big part of my identity, but I really really wish it was.

I am a little more westernized than an average west Asian girl my age but I'm pretty sure I'll be considered quite conservative if I get to live in the west. However, I have this ability to fit in no matter where I am. I'm the living definition of "in between".

Yeah same, and when I handed in a project with the bare minimum that I did know, I lost marks because it was incomplete

I feel your pain. Especially when your family isn't the typical American that has been here since the 1700s.
