"man, that's awesome!" min yoongi’s best friend clapped him on the back, dimples on full display. “namjoon, you’re embarrassing me.” yoongi blushed as the people stared at the duo in the park. “sorry.” joon toned it down, but he was bubbling with excitement.
“I can’t believe you got the deal before me.” he whined, popping his gum and yoongi sighed. “we agreed that whoever was going to america first would bring the other with them, remember? I’m sure it’ll take me a few days to get settled, but I’ll talk to the company about bringing you over. you’re not just my best friend namjoon- you’re a talented rapper in your own right.”
namjoon’s smile lit up the place, and though yoongi felt sad he’d be leaving korea for three years, there was a light in his eyes that namjoon hadn’t seen since his jimin’s death.
three years ago
“jimin!” yoongi’s voice was raw as he screamed his boyfriends name over and over. the mochi smile was permanently transfixed onto his face. the car driver rushed out of the side, bright headlights illuminating the faces in front of the vehicle.
“jimin!” he screamed, shaking his boyfriend hard. “is this your friend?” the man crouched next to yoongi. “my boyfriend.” “i’m so sorry.” the man’s heart broke as the yoongi screamed that terrible scream again, pounding jimin’s chest. he wasn’t coming back.
the rain drenched the men, but neither of them were going anywhere. yoongi wanted to hate him, but the man was barely older than him, so nervous and so genuinely sorry that yoongi bit back anything harsh his tongue had to lash out at.
“yoongi! omfg yoongi, what the hell happened?” namjoon rushed at his friend, kneeling next to them, rain pounding in his ears. as the thunder boomed and lightning flashed, the man went back in his car, waiting for the ambulance while the boys sat with jimin, crying.
“you can’t leave! it isn’t true!” yoongi screamed, holding jimin tightly. “yoongi. yoongi. you have to let go.” namjoon was coaxing him, holding him, enduring his curses and punches. finally, when the ambulance came wailing and jimin was took away with grim faces, yoongi turned to namjoon.
“goddammit namjoon! why are you even here? this was our special place!” namjoon held his best friend as he broke down, crying in his arms. the police came and took the man away, and the boys sat there until the next morning, totally exhausted, sleeping against each other.
“we have to go see him.” yoongi said softly as namjoon dried his hair. it was the last words namjoon had heard from his friend for eight months.
“namjoon. namjoon?” namjoon laughed, patting yoongi shoulder. “sorry, I was thinking about miya.” yoongi smirked, teasing him but namjoon gave nothing away. “go pack! you leave in a couple of days!” yoongi bid him farewell and left, thinking about that night himself.
jimin. he’d have the biggest smile on his face, encouraging yoongi right now. harshly, yoongi swallowed and turned to the flower shop, purchasing lilies and driving to the graveyard, lost in thought. he parked and looked at the gravestone to the right, touching it forlornly.
park jimin

“I want you to be your light”
he set the lillies down, smiling softly. ”I love you baby.” and he was sure jimin answered him.
timeskip: 2 years
yoongi walked down the cold streets of la, wondering about namjoon. he hadn’t heard from him since his wedding, and after that, it was clear he prioritized miya more than yoongi. they were drifting apart anyways, but yoongi was sad to let it go.
in a way, namjoon was all that he had left of korea. yoongi sat on a empty bench, looking at the stars above him. “hey.” a quiet voice shocked him from his head. “hobi? what are you doing here?” jung hoseok, yoongi’s only korean labelmate sat next to him, hands in his pockets.
“I was at the bar.” he said simply and yoongi sighed. in the two years that he had been in america, he had found out two things. 1, that being gay was much more accepted here and 2, that jung hoseok liked him. and he wasn’t sure whether he was attracted to hoseok or repulsed him.
whenever he looked at hobi, jimin was the face that appeared in his mind. “yoongi, we need to talk.” he said simply and yoongi turned to him. “yes?” without opening his eyes, he knew hobi was frowning in the endearing way he frowns.
“you know how I feel about you. why won’t you accept me?” instead of telling him about his jimin, yoongi wondered whether he could craft a plausible lie, but decided to pour his heart out.
“there is much you don’t know about me hoseok. but there is something you should know first.”
for the next one hour, yoongi entertained hoseok by telling him stories about korea, purposefully avoiding jimin, but he could sense that wasn’t enough. “what about park jimin?” hobi slurred and yoongi’s eyes snapped open.
“what did you say?” “what about park jimin?”
yoongi swallowed hard. “what about him?” hobi licked his lip, clearing his throat. “namjoon told me-” he puked all over the ground. yoongi sighed, picking him up. “let’s go home.”
the next morning, hobi groaned as the sunlight filtered through the living room blinds, landing on the couch. “yoongi?” he asked and a cup of coffee was placed quietly on the table.
“we need to talk.” he said simply, watching hobi drink the coffee.
“namjoon called me last year. i’ve known ever since.” yoongi hid his emotions behind a poker face.
“you’ve known for a year and never told me?”
“I know you’re afraid to love again, but i’ve seen your face when you’re rapping or hanging out with me yoongi. there’s this shine in your eyes that you can’t fake. I know you, I really do. and I know this isn’t what jimin would have wanted.”
yoongi suddenly felt a course of pure rage fill his head.
“excuse me? you didn’t even know him.” he said icily and hobi retreated.
“i’m sorry.” he said quietly, getting up to leave.
yoongi let him, watching carefully.and he realized there was nothing in his heart.
that night, he called namjoon for the first time and they talked, really talked.
and he called jimin, leaving yet another rant on his phone, knowing very well he’d never hear it.
for the first time today though, he ended the message differently.
instead of the “I love you baby.” he always said, today, he said, “would you hate me jimin?”
and deep down, he knew the answer.
time skip: two months
hobi and yoongi dropped out of contact, never meeting up or hanging out.
and yoongi realized hobi was right. there was a shine in his eyes, and a happiness in his heart and without his sunshine he felt gloomy and he didn’t like it.
“meet me at the cafe in 10.” yoongi wrote simply, and walked to the quiet cafe.
he ordered his usual and took it outside, to the the bench and waited.
right on time, hobi ran up, fixing his hair.
“yoongi-” he skidded to a stop, and yoongi got up.
hobi bowed his head a little, and yoongi lifted it with a finger and stared into hobi’s eyes.
“looks like I’ve accepted you.”
hobi’s face lit up and yoongi knew he made the right choice.
and he uttered those words he’d thought he’d never utter again.
“i love you.”
with a soft step, yoongi was absorbed into hobi, his lips were on his, he could literally taste the sunshine oozing from him and he saw hobi’s face registering that emotion as well when he pulled away.
“thank you.” hobi said quietly as they walked away, and yoongi immediately stopped, turning to him.
“I thought I’d never love after jimin. you proved me wrong. why are you thanking me?” yoongi asked, smiling at his love.
“because you’re my hope.”
