I recently started watching Gilmore Girls for the first time and I'm on season 2 currently. Loving it to death. I've always wanted to try it but just never did until now.

I've always known Rory had a best friend who was Korean and it made me wonder if this show was or is popular in Korea today. Actually since this show started in 2000 that probably means Korea didn't get it until maybe a decade later if I were to guess. So I'm wondering if the character Lane helped this show find an audience over there.

I'm also aware of fan backlash against the portrayal of Lane and more specifically her mother. Although we do have to remember this was Hollywood in the early 2000s. Lane always acted like South Korea was a 3rd world country and her mother was a religious nut who would scare Kim Jong Um.

Just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Are you sure you're straight :haylul:

I think Lane's view of SK would be a bigger deal since, well, lets not circle the airport to long... Since Asian Parents [not all] tend to place high standards on their children and monitor them at greater rates. But I think the fact that Mrs. Kim's treatment of Lane is likely the same as others within that religious context. I don't remember what denomination they were, but I know plenty of christians who think secular music is evil. Who think guitars [in church] are tacky, bad, or satanic. I mean there's even that line in S2 when Lorelai says Christian Rock is an oxymoron. lol. This is seen with lane stashing cds in her floorboards.

The true question is... What do you think of Paris?

Yes I'm straight but I swear I feel like I was supposed to be gay. I always like things that are aimed at girls more than guys.

I'm in early season 2 and Lane just got back from Korea and she was talking about all the great rock music cds she found while there. I saw a post on reddit by a Korean American not liking this scene cause it made it seem like Korea has no identifiable culture of it's own. Like it only exists as a place to find hidden gem Western music. They said if this took place in the 80s and early 90s it wouldn't be a big deal but by 2001 South Korea was on it's way up to becoming a major player in the world.

And Paris!!! Oh my god! Shes annoying but when she told the school about who she saw kissing it pissed me off so bad.

I feel your pain. I mean how many gay men would be obsessed with Holey Moley and video games. lol. If I was straight I would get so much sh*t for saying that.

Yeah, the premise here seems flawed. I don't listen to much k-rock outside of day6 and cnblue... but the k-pop that was big in 2000-2001 was what Shinhwa, S.E.S. G.O.D., etc. Some of these groups are heavily inspired by 90s pop-r&b music. I've seen Shinhwa compared to B2B at times... and the western influence on k-pop might even be bigger today. You are probably more knowledgable about gen 1.. Does it sound like it has western influences?

Gen 1 had heavy influence from western music. Especially hip hop and r & b. I've always seen SES as a Korean TLC. Then of course BOA has Britney written all over her.

I guess it's to be expected that the show writers had no idea about Korea and its rapidly growing Entertainment industry. It would probably be the same today if it wasn't for PSY and BTS and Parasite.

And I swear I was just about to tag you in this thread when I saw there were still no replies. I had a hunch you liked this show too. Also was Lane born in Connecticut? That's probably another reason why she did not want to go to Korea. She made a comment to Rory along the lines of "That will be in my memoir. A Connecticut Yankee in Dusan".
