I dont hate hp.. i just do not like some of her decisions, and the newer stuff particularly part 2 is weak.

for better or worse she changed the game and got the bulk of a generation of kids to read again. Ill forgive a lot for just that :)

True. I'd be interested to see what other book series are the case in other generations from your perspective? I mean Goosebumps, Magic Tree House, Little House, Percy Jackson, Narnia are considered children classics. Is HP a bigger influence on children reading than those books or about the same level?

Lol i have many wow char with Silmarillion names ( there is an Oloin for example ) Varda is my hunter, Gothmog my pally ( lol he is BE and the og story for BE pallys is DARK so i figured the balrog captain would work )

As to reading .
HP is pretty unique in that with the digital age reading fiction was suffering. She for sure does not get all the credit.
But because of her and say Brandon Mull , RR folks realized that reading books could be fun.

Earlier eras had natural stepping stones to reading. going from children's lit like Dr. Seuss bears ect into Narnia , watership down, Tom sawyer huck fin the other classic teen works secret garden treasure island ect was natural.

I know i just my case it was hard to get kids into spending time with a book.
I og bought the first HP 3-4 pack to give to a nephew but he would not read em so i kept em .. then 6 moths later her was invested ... and became a read after. the majority of ya fiction after that i read to talk with the kids about the books. some authors i still buy just for me. and i still have nieces and nephews to read with.

Probably a great influence on kid/teens ability to conceptualize as well. I didn't play D&D myself as a child/teen, but I did play MMOs and let me tell you I could spend hours just on the create a character window. And the moral alignment aspect of D&D would be a good precursor on teaching kids/teens about Modern Philosophy given that the moral alignment is based on Deontology. Perhaps that is a bit of a reach to think that teens that play d&d would be interested in Immanual Kant though.

I guess it would depend on the attention level of the child and their reading capabilities. The intended reading level of the HP series tends to shift after PoA.. I mean in 4th Grade I began to learn [in history class] about slavery and wars between Settlers and Native American tribes, but the concept of Nazi Germany, which much of the HP villains are modeled after would have been a stretch at least until 13 for me to have a rudimentary understanding of. Plus the books are like 600-800 pages after PoA.

Plus as you said in other posts JKR does tend to incorporate her own views Moreso than C.S. Lewis did with the Aslan-Jesus connection. I mean I'm 29 and I think I don't even know all the failures of nuance that JKR put in the books. But HP books are definitely a spring board for delving into more fantasy type books. I preferred the Narnia books which I just read two years ago though. Going back to the bone-chilling reality of the normal world after being kings and queens for 16 years. The children took on Archetypes of personalities that while not exhaustive are probably indicative of today's personality styles. I do wonder if C.S. Lewis inspired JKR in creating the houses of Hogwarts. Four Kings/Queens.This is probably speculative, but she seems to have been inspired to Roald Dahl so why not C.S. Lewis.

Learning (if they had a good dm) how small choices could impact a character long term. those were great things for ppl to learn.

She may have pulled the houses idea from the books though.

Narnia is a really fun series. As you said for real growing to adulthood as Kings and Queens to be back in WW2 England as children would be a shock.

oh the OZ books were stepping stone way way back too.

Verne is about the most impactful author i can think of in a scifi real world science area. The man Shaped imagination for almost a century until what he dreamed was actually built.

I find it interesting that she would say that given that she had script control in the HP movies meaning that scripts had to be approved by her and some of the female characters [not Hermione] were vapid and useless compared to their book counterparts.

Ah Supernatural. I loved that show but stopped at about Season 8 I think. How many seasons have you watched? Does the later seasons hold up/are they worth watching?

Now this is a series I watched from beginning to the end.

I have met very few say > 40 programmer's ect who did not do D&D or some sort of table top stuff. That was another point i used to really push against back in the day. Sure ppl can go to far, but the idea of cooperatively playing a game that for the most part is abstract and in ones head accepting chance into the outcomes. And yet adapt. Learning (if they had a good dm) how small choices could impact a character long term. those were great things for ppl to learn.

D&D is something I've never been fortunate enough to play. (Edit: I realised I didn't add "often" at the end of this sentence lol). I've played D&D. But it's been a long while and it wasn't a regular thing, but I wish it was.

But I love watching Critical Role. I'm Currently on Episode 81 of Season 2. Naturally being professional video game and animation voice actors makes the whole experience so incredible. And they are long time friends so their chemistry and humour is great.

Matt Mercer is a sensational story teller and writer and his world/campaigns are a joy to watch. CR has certainly given more exposure to D&D in recent years and loads of people have credited playing D&D due to watching CR.
