Imo 3rd gen and 1st were the oldest generations, 2nd and 4th gen had a lot 14-15 year olds, and to be fair, Canny likely will be 14 by the time she debuts.

I think the youngest Maknaes in 3rd gen were 16-17 instead of 14-15.


Kpop is growing to where wealthy children are being groomed for it from a young age, starting off as child actors and child models, rather than teens auditioning and starting their careers off then.
Somi (21), Ella Gross (14, who's probably gonna debut soon in Teddy's label), NewJeans Hyein (14), StayC Sieun (21), all have a significant amount of time in the industry already despite their ages. Outside of Hyein, who still has over 5 years of experience, everyone else I've mentioned has 10+ years of working already

When BLACKPINK debuted, they were all adults... Why is it hard for YG to do the same thing now? I seen knetz saying a 20 yo is too old to debut in ygngg. Dunno why. That was Jennie's age. Jisoo debuted at 21.

I read multiple times over the years that the average age to debut was 18. However that seems to have been the for 2nd and 3rd Generation because ever since the beginning of the 4th Gen (so about 2019), it seems like debuting significant numbers of people below 16 has become increasingly common. The only GG I can remember off the top of my head who were all 18+ when debuting are aespa and (G) I-DLE.


*Average years to train from what I heard was 3. So if these kids are 13-14, many of them may have began training since 10-11 years old. Remember that Jennie described training at YGE as a "dark and cruel world", she began at like what 14? Imagine debuting at 14!!

Throughout the 1st and 2nd Gen you did have the occasional person below 16, usually only one or maybe two in a few groups. BoA debuted at 14. Off the top of my head so did Taemin, Krystal, and I believe Hyuna. Sulli, Amber ( f(x) ) and Minzy (2NE1) were 15. But heck Dara and Bom were 25! I can't imagine that happening in the 4th Gen.....So there always young idols but within the same group there would often be large age gaps, but 4th Gen is increasingly debuting young groups all around it seems.

This has been the norm for idols in general not just in kpop. The usual strategy is to have young idols cater to a younger audience but it starts to get weird when the actual age of the idol at debut is like 14 when they should be training during that time. Why not have them train for longer until they’re 17 or 18? All I know is that whenever money is involved, morals are thrown out the window.

It's already been noted that all of NCT Dream was under 16 except for Mark, who was still under 18. There are early NCT 127 shows where they talk about having to wrap up filming because of their ages.

It feels like in all the groups I can think, there is at least one teenage member. In addition to the ones already mentioned like Shinee, SNSD and fx:

In EXO, Kai and Sehun were 18, DO was 19.
In Red Velvet, Joy was 18, I think, and Yeri 14 or 15.
In NCT, Jaehyun, YangYang and Sungchan were 19 - so that's 10 of the 23 members that were teenagers.
In aespa, NingNing was 18
In TVXQ, Changmin was 15 or 16 IIRC.

The irony is that people complain about young idols but were slamming on one of the SM Rookies for being too old to debut at 26.

we’ve been through this cycle too many times before. ENHYPEN, IVE, Class:y, Newjeans, a bit with LSRFM, etc. they all had people outraged that 14 y/os were debuting and minors were wapping on the floor but after a few months the paragraphs about minors in kpop are thrown out the window if people like the music and stan ; just like that the group becomes successful, and companies don’t see a reason to not debut minors. No matter what kpop Stans are going to support groups, especially if they are big3/hybe, and sadly that’s just the way it will be unless Stans organise a mass stand against it that gets the company’s attention. But I doubt that’ll happen anytime soon

This is true. I think the West only (sorta) stopped the teen idol/movie star formula once several major child stars had public mental breakdowns and the whole persona became controversial and harder to sale . But even with that, girl/boy groups like One Direction were around older high school ages when they came out.
