Why do Americans cut their bread crusts? (1 Viewer)

I watched this video on youtube and found out your bread is more white, spongier, can stay on the shelves for a week and also has the perfect shape for toast. I always wondered why you cut your crust, when it's nowhere near as hard as european crusts...
Why? Aesthetics? Unflavorful crust? Weak gums? Brighten me up!

i eat my crust :p, some ppl just dont like the crust but it taste the same to me esp on regular loaf bread.....
always chalked it up to when parents cut the crust for kids and they just got used to it being that way

Saying crusts are soft is like saying that soup is orange Some crusts are soft and some aren’t. I don’t cut them off but I can’t say I enjoy tough chewy meh tasting things that tire my jaw out. I have less experience but I never noticed differences between European bread and the type of “American” bread that we used to buy (we only make bread now). If anything “European” might have been softer, though I’m not certain and that probably varies.

This is the kinda crust we have. It is rough, vut the crunchiness is what we enjoy.

And this is what i've always seen advertised in videos from the US. Which would be like a brioche consistency for us. I find thus crust very soft just from looking.
But maybe u have the same crusts as us?

There is also a myth among my folks that mom's used to say to their children when fhey didn't wanna eat their crusts. If you don't eat your crust, you won't get rosy cheeks when u grow up.

It tastes slightly different but not hugely different. You’ll probably notice a difference in taste, but it’s not astronomically huge or anything like that.

It probably is to other countries or if you’re not used to eating American bread, but for me, since I’m so used to it, it doesn’t taste sweet at all. Not even a little.

John Harris did what John Harris does best, pick and choose his view point and show only what backs him up. Most of the US doesn't cut the crust off. It's honestly the only part of store bought bread with flavor. Spending just pennies more also will get you better quality bread. The US has all the same breads that the rest of the world has. Maybe we don't have the "corner bread store" but we still have bread stores and they aren't as expensive has he makes out. I used to like his stuff but after doing my own nerdy research I find a lot of what he says is very slanted. Like everything else, bread can go from very sour to very sweet in the US. It depends what your looking for and where you go. My family is very much on the sourdough side of bread loving. If you go to the store and pick up good old white American wonder bread then that's what you get and thats what you'll know. I personally love potato bread as well as baguette's. Enjoy John Harris's video's for their entertainment value not for their "accurate" information.

I agree some soups are orange. Just like some Americans buy soft bread. It happens but I can’t imagine that it’s really that crazy big here compared to other places. If you want to talk breads as a whole really plenty of European places have super soft bread and are sometimes famous for such breads.
