But to answer your question, it’s because every time I end up trying to stan another boy group, I end up unintentionally comparing them to Stray Kids, and they usually fall short, or I just don’t feel as connected to them (through no fault of their own of course).

I see! I can kinda understand it, when I was super hardcore into Twice for a while and would try to watch content of another group, I would end up thinking: oh.. but there is so much Twice content I have not watched yet, why watch other groups

I guess. I think the culture around bg can be more insular and dedicated. I think about now where you have gg fans flocking to the next new shiny new thing and certainly moreso in Korea, they are willing to casually check out all these gg hence why many are capable of charting much moreso than bg. That cultivates more people willing to casually stan.

Bg can’t do that and need to focus more on their strengths in cultivating a dedicated fandom to get good sales. I think asking someone to be more dedicated than a casual listener is already a lot of investment, hence why someone would want to stick with one group and not bother with more. This ofc leads to an issue where since the culture for bg is so insular, their music and content isn’t spreading or getting the wide reach in the way gg content and music is. So inevitably, I think bg will stay that way unless a major shakeup happens.

ofc, now gg can get large fandom too (I believe lsf’s 1st day sales for their recent album was in the millions, which is their heighest and surpasses their past releases by a lot). So you do wonder where things will go from here since large fandom might not be as much as a hurdle for gg as it used to be.

But while those numbers are incredibly impressive, I think no other 4th gen could do that so far, if compared to the new record SVT put up, ofc its still a lot less. So while GG are doing better in the sales department, it seems BG are also reaching new unthinkable heights. So I feel like the market in general (or the decication of the fans) is increasing.

tbh i haven't listened to pentagon in a loooong time, the only song i listen to occasionally is shine and that's only when it comes up on shuffle. i should add my favorite songs of theirs back to my library so i don't forget to listen to them, like this is such a good song but i just can't get into stanning them like i tried before, the only member i feel really attached to is kino

I promise to keep that in mind! And personally I think thats so great, because it combats the thing I always desliked most about kpop, the treatment of older groups like they are trash. Now groups like SVT, BP and Twice are showing that they bring a lot of value in an extended market, that does not only focus on korea alone and having very popular and established members is very valuable and can lead to the situaionts we are seing with those groups now.

With that said and in regards to especially the new dominant rookie GG. I think its important to keep in mind, that 2 out of 3 groups are IZ*One successors in part and both have the #1 and #2 most popular members of that group within their ranks respectively + each another very popular idol from that group. So its not like they are pure rookies that started at zero. New Jeans are really the only Rookie Group in a classical sense and their rise is most impressive to me, but ofc here also they are backed by HYBE (just like SVT and LSFM) and from what I can see, they are doing a very good job to make sure their groups are doing all the right things and push them like crazy (with the power and reach no other label ever had)

It's the music and performance for me.

When I got into kpop (2014-15), girl groups were still very into the cutesy and I'm not a fan of that extra high-pitched style. All music for me starts with the vocals, altho I appreciate a good bop. I'll often pick out the voices in a group and recognize those before I know the members' names.

EXO for me were about the music and the voices, then performance and dance and yes, they're fine af (I'm not trying to act like that doesn't matter but there are other people I think are fine af but I don't care for the music or vocals, so that alone is not enough to carry me through) and I like their personalities. Didn't think I'd have another ult, then NCT and the various sub-units snuck up on me in a similar way even as I was paying less attention at that time to kpop. Although the sound of kpop gg started to shift slightly, in general Twice and Bp and groups like OMG just weren't for me. (I have always liked RV BUT I dislike the red stuff so much I don't think I could say I ult or stan them if I don't like half their disco LOL) I also really really love choreo - it's one of the coolest things about kpop - and the gg choreo just wasn't it. (Yes, I understand that some dancers were limited by the expectations of gg and I get that but..0


But this is why I ult some bgs and like some ggs.

I think we started to see a shift in gg styles post-BP with more emphasis on girl crush, which got me listening to more gg and checking them out after years of avoiding them. This was about bigger vocals vs high pitched cute ones and stronger dance performance and more complex choreo.

Now I even ult a gg - Purple Kiss! And Billlie and XG certainly come at me hard. Both groups are heavily grounded in the vocal power (big r&b vocals) and dance performance I love.
