Ok I'll just post this and then really get off:pandacop:

I need to stop looking to this and I guess it would be even worse and I'd learn even more if I looked beyond the basics on Wikipedia but somehow ended up here and MOST of this I didn't even know about, we never learned about this! Not in school or anywhere! And forget about any of my schools celebrating AAPI month. (I'm 2nd gen American so I couldn't have learned any of this from my parents and stuff)

Now that I have gotten into that I should learn more about this later eventually, I was just thinking about lack of representation and some stereotypes and prejudices and feeling othered, internalized racism, etc. nothing like this for me personally I'm lucky enough, quite a few Asians in California

1684364901397.png

.

Ofc this is about Asian American racism in the past, I did not know most of this, just main stuff, gold rush, railroad, Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese Internment Camps, "Yellow Peril"

1684365140809.png

first Asian people in America were Filipino and Indian slaves, I did not know this:pepenani:

ofc they only want Asians for cheap labor???

1684365439055.png

They exclude Chinese people from coming to the US but still need cheap labor so they get other Asians for more cheap labor then exclude them too??????

Now the Asiatic Exclusion League it talked about:

1684365841678.png

1684365985197.png

Pacific Coast Race Riots, Race being Asian, multiple ethnicities ... :
1684366048225.png

1684366190059.png

so first no more Chinese exclusion and can become citizens, other Asians still can't

Then Filipinos and Indians could become citizens but quota on immigration, and still only these 3 Asian ethnicities

Then Asians and other non African POC could become naturalized, but quotas STILL and can government can "suspect" Asians of doing smth and bar them

Naturalization act, only free white people and those of African descent could become naturalized, and no Asians would be seen as white, Japanse and Indian tried
1684366504851.png

They took away citizenship from Asians who became naturalized, learned English, stayed here for decades, represented the country in the army for not being white or of African descent!

1684366640345.png

So this is why they let (only 100) Filipinos and Indians become naturalized :welp::welp::welp: again just want cheap labor, just educated, not manual now

Luce-Celler act:

.

Now I'll really get off, if you reply to the thread, feel free, I'll come back later, gotta study but this made me so mad/sad:yolk:

I guess when most of the discrimination was going on, the most Asian immigrants were coming from the mentioned countries (China, Japan, Korea, India, Phillipines) so those were specifically touched upon and excluded, but then ALL Asians became excluded after excluding Chinese and Indians as well and then ALL Asians besides Chinese, Filipinos, and Indians were excluded until the anti-Asian exclusion laws were nullified, and then still quotes. And before exclusion, they still couldn't naturalize for being Asian rather than white or of African descent

if it's in the wrong section plz move, thank youuu

The sad part is that while I didn't know most of this, it's not all that surprising to me. I did get confused a bit about certain sections because it seemed like some included people from the middle east and some didn't, since iirc I read about how they were able to get citizenships before other Asians due to being counted as white, but maybe I got the timing wrong or they didn't include them after because they were counted as white at that point. Either way it's a lot of messed up stuff for a lot of people, no question about that.

Ah well

so there was a Wikipedia article about Asian American immigration

that one said originally ppl from west asia were once considered immigrants from Asia but now are considered immigrants from the Middle East, so in that article they were not specifically talked about

Mostly the most prominent Asian countries who came as cheap labor during when restriction

all I know is that other than African descent for naturalization it just said “free white people” not a certain descent or heritage so a Japanese and an Indian tried to argue that they were white and should be naturalized (both learned English, became productive members of society and were there for decades, were granted citizenship, and then had it revoked because the government was like “hey you shouldn’t have got citizenship you’re not white or of African descent”

japanese guy tried to argue that since his skin tone is whiter than some white people he is white and should be a citizen, and asked if the government was saying caucasians are superior to people from the continent of Asia? Government was like no you’re ethnically Japanese all Japanese are Asian you’re not white.

Indian guy was from highest society or social structure in India and he didn’t try to argue Asians were white or even Indians were white. He tried to argue that bc there is some similarity between some Indian languages (there is a ton idk exact number) and some European languages, that he could be considered Caucasian, and bc he is a high society Indian or wtv, he is a pure bred so therefore white and Caucasian and not mixed with “Indians” (from lower classes in Indian society) who are “actual Asians and disgusting and he would never associate with a lower class Indian woman bc she’s a disgusting Asian and he shares Americas race views and basically “count the highest class of Indian society in the class system as white and I will be racist to all actual Asians aka all other asian countries and lower classes of Indians bc I’m white and better than disgusting Asians”

ok so ofc im mad abt this being racist to your race to try to be seen as white when you don’t look white and people from your race and even your country are victims of violent racist attacks against ASIANS for BEING ASIAN (bc yes you are) in the country isn’t cool

But he got rejected

but anyway the government was like “no, having a similar language is just a linguistic thing it doesn’t make you Caucasian or white. All Indians are Asians I don’t care if you’re high in Indian society, at the end of the day you are an Asian, all laws about Asians apply to you like all other Asians”

If someone from any other country tried to say they were white not Asian idk, if a middle eastern person sued for that it wouldn’t be in that article. But the courts decided (Japanese people and Indian people were already considered Asian even by law bc they were some of the main countries cheap Asian labor came from originally, (the others being China, Korea, and the Philippines ofc) and specifically excluded before they went “all Asians” to cover the other countries as well) that no you are not white and legally all Japanese people and all Asian people are not white or seen as white and are Asian, and everything applying to Asians applies to all Japanese and all Indians)

If a middle eastern person also sued and the courts said they, unlike Japanese people and Indian people, were white, then I guess it would be in a middle eastern immigration Wikipedia article

The asiatic exclusion league wasn’t like a law or smth, it was a racist group basically, and first it started out as only Koreans or Japanese exclusionary. Then they were like “wait there’s a lot of these other Asians taking our jobs too, Chinese and Indians, why not be racist to them too, and become the asiatic exclusionary league instead of korean and Japanese.” So then that was the name, asiatic but they were being racist against Asians from those 4 specific countries and having racist attacks and advocating segregation and stuff. And then it said they tried to include the other East Asian countries even with less cheap Asian labor immigration to be racist against as well, so that wasn’t a league but it doesn’t say it included or didn’t include middle eastern. The actual fighting for segregation was for the countries they specifically said they’d be racist against and had “oriental” schools, idk if they made middle easterns go there. And the violent attacks were on people from China, India, and japan, again cuz prob most cheap immigrant labor was from there.

for the naturalization before any exclusionary laws it was free whites and African descent which idk if middle eastern people argued they were white and won, once again

for immigration. They specifically stopped Chinese immigration first while other Asians didn’t have these Chinese exclusionary laws against them. Then when the cheap Asian labor came from japan and India instead, they first extended the Chinese exclusion act to include Japanese people, then excluded Indians as well a bit later, then after some years did the asiatic barred zones act, which affected some countries from Middle East (so not all and idk which ones), and basically all other Asian countries east, southeast, South Asia from immigrating as well, setting 0 people from those Asian countries could immigrate to the US after they stopped the main 3 Asian cheap labor countries of china, japan, and India. That wasn’t a “race” thing but a country thing so ig the included middle eastern countries were barred, and that was a law.

for race, US courts have officially recognized Japanese people and Indians as Asian there and all, and I don’t know how or when or anything about this happening, but middle easterns - unlike people from those two Asian countries and probably most others who’d try to claim they’re white - are legally classified as white/Caucasian for race in America. On all legal documents they are required to put white as their race, it is considered lying if they put Asian instead. Meanwhile on legal documents, Indians, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Thai, etc are required to put Asian for their race

when they became legally seen as white or Caucasian and if it gave them legal benefits against the racist laws against Asians idk.

As far as socially goes, middle easterns are definitely not “white passing” they don’t look like white, or like a racist white supremacist person wouldn’t see a middle eastern person and think “oh a white person!” and would probably not treat them like how they only treat “white” people, or not be racist, prejudiced, etc. if they have an ethnic name, just like if an Asian or African heritage person had a white name, people would see it and think they’re a person of color, etc. even if an Asian is Christian and has a “western” sounding first name, or like many asians do, have two names, an “English” name that’s easier for Americans to pronounce and all and is a Christian name, as well as an ethnic name, that’s perhaps a word in an Asian language, like many many Asians do, most of the last names would give away that they’re not European, and seeing the name would still register as “oh this person is Chinese, korean, Indian, whatever” or “this persons last name sounds East Asian, this persons name sounds south or southeast Asian” or wtv. And similarly middle eastern last names don’t sound or look like European names, seeing it on a form or paper, doesn’t mean a racist would think that’s a white person or not be racist or anything.

the exception to the Asian last name being obviously though is Filipino last names, despite them being one of the first main groups of Asians here, and that is because of the Spanish control of Philippines for so long, many Filipinos have Spanish last name, and so from a form, paper, resume, etc, just seeing the name people probably wouldn’t think “oh they’re Filipino “ or “oh they’re Asian” most likely.

because of Portugal also invading and colonizing Asia and some Asian countries, some people from the invaded countries such as India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, macau, have last names that sound Portuguese or European or not Asian etc, but the majority of people from those countries still have “ethnic” names, at least last names, unlike the Philippines.

but yeah, they are also not given minority protections or wtv that other Asians are, but aren’t white passing either

and since they’re not white passing and won’t be seen as white, they can identify socially as Asian if they want or feel and all but won’t be seen as Asian legally

there’s also a separate Arab heritage month in April (Arab people being considered middle eastern and thus white) like separate from this aapi month in America

and again if they want to celebrate aapi month too, read, eat, learn, etc related to their culture, they’re free too ofc, and I don’t think most Asian Americans would have a problem with that, heck I saved a book about an Iranian American in my mass saving aapi books, because they don’t have white privilege because they’re generally not white passing and so treated as white by society. but that is again socially, so it still make them white/not Asian legally in the eyes of the law

Central Asians weren’t mentioned here I don’t believe (the stan countries) but they’re not Middle East and except for the former Soviet Union are considered Asian I’m pretty sure.

I guess that makes sense. I looked it up again and it seems like back then they argues that they were white and therefore should be able to get the citizenship at least some of the time, but now there are some from that area that would prefer the reverse, for them to have a separate category from white because of identity, protection, and other minority related reasons. I don’t think they necessarily want to be included in the Asian category usually, they’d rather a Middle East and North America category, maybe just because they don’t feel connection with the Asian side of whatever, not sure. But it would explain why they aren’t discussed in these articles, and why central Asians aren’t either.

Tldr ig
idk how affected they were by these Asian American racist laws or when they were recognized as white/Caucasian and not Asian as their race by the law, bc the only examples here was the courts saying Japanese people and Indian people are always Asian, so idk if they got legal benefits against anti Asian laws back during those days. But they were not talked about in the Asian American immigration article bc legally their race is not considered Asian in America.

but they are not white passing looks wise or with their names, so don’t have white privilege today and could still face racism in society with the legal status having no advantage to them over other Asians, because rather than anti Asian laws now it’s racist people and actions, lack of representation, stereotyping, microetc

i also don’t know if they have hate crime protection like other Asians do (being a minority) if a white person (so legally same race) attacked them for their ethnicity or something

@Vikki you replied but ig tldr for anyone else

I guess that makes sense. I looked it up again and it seems like back then they argues that they were white and therefore should be able to get the citizenship at least some of the time, but now there are some from that area that would prefer the reverse, for them to have a separate category from white because of identity, protection, and other minority related reasons. I don’t think they necessarily want to be included in the Asian category usually, they’d rather a Middle East and North America category, maybe just because they don’t feel connection with the Asian side of whatever, not sure. But it would explain why they aren’t discussed in these articles, and why central Asians aren’t either.
I think it’s bc central Asians maybe immigrated less at that time, I don’t think they were ever considered white by Europeans/ European descendants

you think they also went to court and unlike Japanese and Indian people were supported by the court and seen as white?

oh that’s the thing tho, legally, there’s no middle eastern and North America race box on most legal forms so with that they would be white or Caucasian while most people with ancestry from the continent of Asia would put asian

socially they can identify or celebrate however they want to, and there is the Arab heritage month too, they won’t have white privilege or white American experience but they could also not identify with Asian American experience or whatever even if they have some cultural similarities, especially with Asian countries that neighbor them but are considered central, south, Southeast Asia

Middle East also has African countries like Egypt and Morocco not just all geographically asia

From what I read yeah in the early 1900s someone from that area made the argument that they should count as white, and it was accepted and agreed that they can count. But I think it was a case by case basis where some were granted that “right” and some weren’t, depending on the specific court and the specific area.

I know there’s currently no checkbox for Middle East and North Africa. But people have been pushing for it, and under Obama and Biden the government has made comments that they’re considering adding it. But it hasn’t been added yet, and who knows if or when it will be.

I remember googling this very article(s)
it's rather sad all the happenings with racism and prejudice.
I copped it a lot during high school
Just because I looked different or spoke different.
Breaks my heart to see people suffering, all around the world.

Hm that’s interesting that they allowed it for them but not Japanese or Indian people

especially because the Middle East isn’t just one country it’s a bunch of them, so a court case making a whole bunch of countries from a continent they tried to ban immigration from a whole different race, and the “superior” race is kinda strange to me, that it happened

maybe cuz the Japanese and Indians originally came as cheap labor to Hawaii to work on plantations and work on the railroad after the Chinese exclusion act etc so bc middle easterns didn’t they weren’t seen in such a Low light as neither “job stealers” parallelism to Mexicans today tbh tho I literally did not know any other Asians besides Chinese Americans on the railroad were used for cheap labor during that time period, or as having less worth or intelligence possibly for doing manual labor for below american rates

tho the two men who sued were productive and skilled members of American society and also versed in American culture society and English the language

yeah I know ppl have been pushing for them to be recognized as a minority

Jewish ppl too, ethnically Jewish ig
