First of all, every new group that is created is unique. They have different members compared to the previous ones, which is usually a mixture of idols taken from the old group and new ones. They have different concepts, visions, producers and so on.

To me the 2 major reaons though why the IOI groups failed:
1. the companies they debuted in
2. the individual popularity of the members taken from the previous group

I think for the company point there is not much to discuss, its HYBE & Starship vs Pledis, Jellyfish, Fantagio & again Starship. By now Pledis got gobbled up by HYBE and Starship also seems to be at a very different point compared to where they have been, when they debuted WJSN.

As for the members. When you look at IVE and LSFM, they have the #1 (Wonyoung) and #2 (Sakura) ranked members from IZ*One in their groups, well at least that was the final ranking in pd48, but I assume Sakura was also second most popular at the end of IZ*One? Please correct me if its wrong, as ofc the popularity at the end is most important, not the ranking from the show.
Compared to IOI, their center and superstar member Somi did not join any group. I'm not sure who was second most popular, but it has to be Chungha I assume? Also went solo..

So I guess my point is, had Somi stayed in JYP and debuted with Itzy or whatever group they had in mind for her, the 2 conditions would also have been met: Good company + very high indiviual popularity. There would never have been any discussion of all post IOI groups failing and its also one of the greatest tragedies in Kpop imo.. please let Somi out of the dungeon :sadcat:

Not that it matters but to be honest I thought Sakura was the most popular Iz*one member, at least for me she was the only one I knew and heard of name wise. :susPepe:

there could also be a difference who is most popular within in the fandom and in general :dubuthink:
That’s true, popularity can be hard to judge I think.

Wonyoung v Sakura is Korea v int fans.

To my knowledge Sakura has never beaten Wonyoung in that crazy brand thing in Korea.
her popularity is China, Japan and to some extent the west, despite massive pushing by every company( she has had a Korean tv show alone in each group).

And my feeling on the whole Sakura v Wonyoung number in pd 48 are still that Sakura was most likely one of the girls rigged in.
Clearly they rigged in Japanese girls. For the exact same reason that gp 999 went public with the ranking after Tuesday(they had 8 of 9 spots filled by Koreans and the one Chinese girl was teh one who resonated teh least with Korea. Xiaoting was in the high teens)
In the trial the pd said he saw teh ranking on Tuesday and chose then and there to fix teh group. The whole point of pd 48 was to get AKB members in specifically Sakura she got the full on Somi treatment.

The team to worry about facing IOI like melt down is Kep1er.

As to IOI the run was short.

The totally dumb ass idea by 3 companies to pull kids out during the limited run of IOI, didn't help and only made the reaction to Wonderland (gugudan) worse. WJSN were still rookies but had released albums pre Yeonjung. DIA were Nugu they had fixing issues of their own, and pulling out Chaeyeon hurt more than helped, so they never got out of nugudom.

Jellyfish managed to Screw up Sejeong who i felt was the real winner of S1, at least she has a solid acting career to support her. Gugudan's failure is a real shame because those girls were really really good the team had everything. Injuries and mental issues really took a toll with members bing missing form many comebacks.
Fantigo took forever(> 2years) to put a group around Yoojung (who is a freaking Star)and Doyeon and then went with a concept/song that was miss/hit especially in the west.

pledis just refused to buy songs( as far as i know the girls did both of them) pissed of the western fans with the way they handled Kyla. pretty much Wasted 10 very good girls careers. Pinky survived by fleeing back to China.

Sohye probably maximized her run.

Chungha was everywhere but has faded.

Somi had her own issues, managed to get kicked from ITZY and JYP. Went to yg and folks are suprised she is rarely seen.

The crazy thing is IOI average age was younger than IZ*ONE

I do think having 2 and a half years to get girls ready really helped Starship.

Also 2 .5 years even given the pandemic let the members be more present in their careers ie write compose direct ect.

The PD 48 management failures have been Woollim and WM, Yet the girls are so strong they have overcome that mostly by themselves. At least eh companies have let them stay crazy active in tv roles ect.

Stone has worked for Yuri.

Minju has been firm in her path we will have to see if it works.

Heck Hyewon is doing very well far better than Sohye who would be her comp.

Hitomi has gone back and worked to change AKB , where that is going remains to be seen.

Nako is working every week in Japan.

Yeuhua who cant run everglow cant f up Yena.

Wonyoung and Yujin were already monsters the time in IZ*ONE showed their specialties and let them grow.

Sakura is a professional Idol she made great calls both in when to push hard for pd 48 and when and how to leave HKT.
Chaewon to my knowledge was the IZ*ONE member who most wanted to still be in a group Woollim did teh best for her letting her transfer and not putting her into Rocket punch.

I do think the promotional period of the groups is a factor. IoI roughly lasted like a year while izone was a bit over 2. That leaves more time for the izone members to leave a lasting impact and grow their fanbases.

of course, what comes down to it is mainly the company’s they debuted in and how they were handled in their respective companies. Still, the time does help.

I think it also didn’t help that some companies debuted the members in other groups (or continued with group promotions for their other group) while they still promoted with IOI
It made many fans really angry

It's actually a really interesting situation to examine.

IOI was definitely more popular with the public. But, IZ*ONE had a crazy fandom that rivalled that of TWICE and BP's at the time, which crazy if you think about it.

I think Somi, Sejeong and Chungha's continued success with the public proves IOI was a force.

But I think where IZ*ONE really succeeded was how long the group was together. They were able to build up a good fanbase. Except Eunbi, Yuri and Hyewon, all the other IZ*ONE members found some success in their groups or solo endeavors.

Good point regarding that IZ*One had a lot more time! But I'm not sure how much impact it would have had if IOI would have stayed together longer and then joined the same groups in the same companies that they did (assuming they are all tied to the company they ended up re-dubuting in)
I was also really surprised to see how huge the fandom of IZ*One was, given the fact that they were a temporary group :passcodea:

Yeah I’m entirely sure about ioi either, but I do think the izone members post izone wouldn’t have as much impact if their time was cut shorter. They were huge and kept getting bigger rapidly. That time in izone, regardless of how limited it was, was used well and did wonders.

That’s not to say izone post izone wouldn’t see a lot of success, i just don’t think the hype would have been as big as it was.

ohhhh such a good point! I actually did not really think about it, but you are right

This is a huge difference compared to IVE and LSFM then and I feel like the companies really learned form this to not repeat that mistake (or it happend by accident, lets not give them too much credit!!)

Adding members to a group that already debuted is always a risk and some people just never get over it or fully accept the new members, so you could already divide the fanbase from the start..

IVE and LSFM in comparison did an outstanding job to avoid such situations, they both debuted some time after IZ*One was disbanded (IVE debuted like half a year later, LSFM 1 year later), so there is clear cut between those 2 events and fans had a chance to come to terms with the situation. Also as no other version of the group is known to anyone (ok lets ignore a little detail about LSFM here :nekosweat:), the fans can't be angry and the groups are fully accepted the way they are!

Its a fair point! Ofc also after I learned by now how the fandom grew together during those difficult times with the scandal, it also created more diehard fans. Those people are more likely now to support the fromer members as they have this special connection with the group.

Interesting that you think Sakura was rigged in, so you think she would not have gotten enough votes to make the group at all? :passcodea: Why do you think she was pushed this hard if you compare her to Somi?

But it makes sense that she can't beat Wonyoung in the brand deal game, I assume they will always prefere a korean person..

Wait you mean the members were removed from IOI while the group was still promoting during that one year? M-net has to have been furious, how did they even agree??

How did Sohye maximize her run? I don't know anything about her so I'm curious

Somi and ChungHa both have the same issue, shitty company (and yes TBL is a shitty company too, whats the point if she is locked up in a dungeon for years!!!) + they are solo.. I'm not sure there was ever a kpop world where solo artists are favored, but certainly this is not the time to be solo.

What are Yuri, Minju and Hyewon doing?

I really can't imagine Chaewon randomly getting added it to rocket punch... I like the group, but it would have been a waste as its just impossible to make something like that work. Yena to everglow was also a big rumor, but it never happend either.

V Sakura as one of the fixes. PD 48 only allowed Koreans to vote and the 7X multiplier on the live Korean phone number text vote exacerbated that.
GP 999 tried to fix that by begging for votes for the non Koreans and dropping the live vote to a 2x multiplier and still Xiaoting finished 9th barly beating 2 other Koreans. The interim final rank for gp 999. i think it was just as bad for pd 48
1685570819028.png

The PD 48 final had 12 Koreans and 8 Japanese members. The court said only Koeun (5th) and Chowon(6th) were rigged out
So that means Every Korean but Haeyoon (FNC is cursed) was in the group as of Tuesday night. I Think having Sakura not in the group would have made mnet and the producers loose their minds they wanted to promote in Japan and so needed a Japanese star. They could fudge the mix a bit With Hyewon, Chaewon having won so many hearts in Japan and Chaeyeon speaking Japanese. So they yanked the 2 Koreans they perceived as the worse fit with the young cute group they wanted. Then put in the 3 best young cute Japanese trainees left. Obv this final rank is crap as to position since there is no way Yujin or Nako were 5,6. I have no doubt Wonyoung won the real vote.

1685571568662.png

Pull out Chowon and Kaeun who were fixed and yunjin who got killed in the intw drama. Sub in Yena, Chaeyeon and Chaewon and ep 8 is the team.
Ep 8 was teh last of the pick 12 votes.
.
1685572414796.png

i compared her to Somi because the show especially the ranking was built around the 2 of them. Whatever rank they had was the focus of the rank ep. Also i was never very impressed with Somi v the other top girls in pd 101, and it was clear from the start that she was in. Compare her to Wonyoung and Yujin who were much younger in pd48, they were more on the ball.

IOI had a Really strange contract.
IOI debuted on May 4, 2016 song was Dreamgirls ( the og plan was to debut with Crush ( the final song from the show))

A whole month later while the reality show was still going. they announced. On June 10, 2016, YMC Entertainment revealed Lim Na-young, Chungha, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Choi Yoo-jung, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon So-mi as members of I.O.I's unit group, slated to promote the group's second album during the summer of 2016.
so first comeback was a remake of a Salt n Pepa song with the sub unit and they went on weekly idol. (as did each of the other girls with their groups who had comebacks or debuts during this time.)

the last comeback was October 17, 2016 Very very very that jyp wrote ( and was supposedly a twice reject) the biggest song.

Then a month later they announced that the group would disband on Jan 31 2017.

they released the last song downpour a digital release like jan 18th,

pick me and veryx3 were by far the biggest hits.

Sohye did a variety show and some small acting (but she had her own agency so she kept most of the money)

Hyewon is doing some tv some acting, a nice chunk of modeling and has a youtube channel with i think the most subs of all the IZ*ONE members.

Yuri is a soloist (3 minis same as Eunbi and Yena salse less than Yena but a bit more than Eunbi{who has a hard style to sell }) and is on the school festival circuit and doing tv .

Minju hosted MBC music core losts of modeling, and has acted that is where she wants to focus.

Yep Eunbi and Chaewon one or both to RP made zero sense. And the same with Yena to Everglow.

The 4 soloist are doing well after WM finally got off their ass with Chaeyeon.

Sorry i love the female pd shows and have all of em downloaded nad watched many many times lol.

I think you made a mistake with the numbers there. You say there where 12 korean and 8 japanese girls left and that all 12 Iz*one members used to be the korean ones, but only 2 got rigged out. So that means at least one japanese member had made it on her own?

Also I think Sakura is quite a bit odler than Wonyoung & Yujin, so they probably did not only pick the youngest & cutest?

Also if Sakura was fixed in, why in such an extreme way as rank 2? Do you think her high placement was important for the japanese promotions?

Regarding IOI
I'm not sure you answered if they had members pulled out of the group during their short contract?
Also they found the time to make unit groups, why?? :headache: Or was the unit formed because the members hat comebacks with their other groups they would be part of??

Correct the final had 12 Koreans and 8 Japanese. the voting as of The day they decided to Rig the results. had 11 Korean and 1 Japanese.
This would not have been great for PR in Japan but 2 of the 11 speak Japanese and 2-3 others really connected in Japan. I am guessing they would have rolled the dice If Sakura was the one and she was ranked high enough to be safe. ( Remember Sakura was already AKS star and very well known in Japan. Of the Japanese Trainees left only Miru had anywhere near the public presence and for weeks during the competition the buzz was they wanted her back to NMB since the biggest NMB Star announced graduation while Miru was filming pd48) Miru is the one who is entering Queendom Puzzle after leaving NMB during the pandemic. also she is a 97 so still older.

Whom ever the Japanese girl who made it was out of the 3 we ended up with she was most likely Super low.

And Remember the Show had used extensive air time on Sakura building her up as the Japanese Rival to the Korean girls. and while yes there was one other younger Japanese girl a 2001 Shitao Miu but she is tall and sexyier and was getting underserved neg press in Korea.

The other 4 were older than Sakura and looked it (who of course looks young and cute)

And Yes they placed Sakura high to add drama and because rank is a big deal in Japan. If She is 2nd then it looks fairer.

Wonyoung (04) and Yujin(03) were the outliers the group had
1 95 (Eunbi) Sakura at 98
3 that count to 99 Hyewon, Yena, Chaeyeon,
a 2000 Chaewon
4 2001's Minju, Nako, Hitomi , Yuri

So aside from Eunbi(they had to have a leader) Miu and Chowon (who they rigged out) they picked the 11 youngers girls in the final.

Sejeong, Mina, Yeonjung, And Chaeyeon stayed under contract to IOI but left for the summer to do the debut or comeback's with their teams.
As you can guess no matter the spin this did not play well at all.

They made the unit group So that the other 7 could do something. also it didn't help that what a man was girl crushy so int fans were really negative about the other girls missing it.
