How Essential Is Animation Quality To You?





As a newcomer to anime.

I've noticed a difference between me and many of the fans of the medium.

For many animation quality is huge.

Berserk 2016 was derided for its animation and many Berserk fans cite that as one of the reasons to avoid it and why in their opinion it's terrible.

Also with the original 1997 adaptation. The more rudimentary animation is often disparaged.

These flaws in animation are often pointed to as "ruining" the experience.

Maybe it's weird to say of a visual medium, but I honestly don't have those issues. As long as the animation is good enough to evoke the emotion. I care much less whether it's top notch.

I'm much more concerned with the story and characters. The tone and music, etc.

The animation feeds into that of course but it's not deal breaking for me.

Berserk 1997 cut a lot of corners in its animation but I still hold it up as a masterwork in storytelling. Berserk 2016, while not nearly as good as the 1997 version, still connected with me and was immensely enjoyable.

Maybe that will change as I get more into anime. But at this point I'm not as greatly concerned with having the most beautiful or top of the line animation.

If they tell a good story and all the other elements are there. I'm good. I can lose myself in it.

if it's choppy or disconcerting
i can't watch
also the actual aesthetic matters
if i can't vibe with the way the characters are drawn it's hard for me to get into it
i am pretty accepting stylistically though

It's not the most important thing to me at all, but it has to be decent. I mean if it's too bad, I get distracted from the story and emotion and it pretty much ruins the whole atmosphere

Extremely important, I don't like the current simplistic way that the animations are being made compared to the early 2000s were imo, were magical.

Some of my favourite tv shows and films have aesthetically pleasing animation. So for me it is almost as equally as important as the execution of the plot. Because I can forgive slightly poor animation if the plot and character development is interesting and well done and likewise I can forgive a plot that isn't as well thought out as long as the aesthetics are still pleasing.

Good examples of some of my favourite shows & films that were masterpieces in both animation and plot are Clannad After Story, Sakurasou no pet na Kanojo, The Monogatari Series, Angel Beats and Nagi no Asukara, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Kimi no Na Wa.

There's also studios who are known to be amazingly consistent when it comes to animation. But can be very hit or miss with the plot execution. P.A Works are very guilty of this. Because they can release a show which is as amazing as Nagi no Asukara and Angel Beats. But then release absolute garbage like Glasslip which despite being beautiful when it came to the animation, was boring as fuck to watch because the plot was poorly executed.

btw watch a show called Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. It's also known as Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Budget works. Because the animation quality is insane!

I'm pretty same tbh, most of time I don't care about animation quality that much unless it's oustandingly good or bad. I like lot of older shows too and usually it doesn't bother me that the animation tends to be less smooth. I think for me the actual art style matters more than animation quality anyways.

For example Rose of Versailles aka Lady Oscar is still one of my favorite animes and its' animation especially in fight scenes isn't best and some special effects are pretty weird lol, but it's older anime- released in 1979 so it's really old in anime standards- and it's art style is really nice to me. Despite the age it looks good and not bad.

Besides for todays anime and animation I think the overuse of computer animation is bothersome at times. Sometimes it's use either so that it doesn't really stand out and isn't that noticeable- some complained that in Goblin Slayer the main character Goblin Slayer himself was cgi and other characters weren't but I didn't notice that at all (maybe I'm just bad at noticing cgi unless it's really obvious which isnt necessarily bad thing enjoyment wise xd).

In Rising of the Shielf Hero the cgi is pretty.. bad though. And by bad I mean it's really noticeable with the monsters, they look like they are from different anime all together. Couldn't find picks though.


And Houseki no Kuni is one of prettiest animes and best animation I have seen and it's full cgi, that's kinda point of it's animation it couldn't have been done without

So I think it's just using having good direction with animation and art what matters, using what you got both art style and animation wise well and without having obvious differences in quality and style.

I just had the itch that I had to finish Plastic Memories first.

I want to add this for Houseki no Kuni since I was frustrated I didn't find more fitting (longer gifs). It spoils a bit- that fight- but otherwise shows of animation of show well I think from art style to fighting animation and . It's kinda brutal though so bit of warnin with that (does it help if i tell you gems can break pieces without dying) ^^;



So Houseki no Kuni was what pretty much converted me out of hating cgi and seeing it's possibilities, still usually it's included in bad way in anime instead of used for cool effects and making things flow like in Houseki no Kuni. And now i want to see more of HnK, I should probably just read the manga at this point..

I'm not too fussed about art styles generally, as long as the animation is fluid especially when it comes to fight scenes particulary since the majority of what i watch is somewhat violent or has a lot of fast pace movement.
The only thing i can be iffy about is 3D animation usually when its used alongside the normal animation style that a particular anime, sometimes it looks off and doesn't blend well and sometimes it goes unnoticed by me, like in Inuyashiki.

Attack On Titan (Kinda)
Goblin King (That first episode is...interesting..)

I second to Elfen Lied, I recently rewatched it and ended up liking it bit more than my high school self did xd It's quite brutal and fucked up at times, lot of nudity, but there is bit of romance mixed in there and even heartwarming moments and cuteness. It's one of those anime classic everyone should know just like Berserk and I think u'd like that one @emanresu xd

Goblin Slayer is also good, definitely more recent ones. It's not as dark to me though I mean the first ep sure is, but it kinda eases up after that one. Idk if I would have watched it if it all about shock factor like the first ep was ^^; Still good watch I ended up enjoying the characters and their growth, especially with Goblin Slayer.

For example, the reason I never got into One Piece or One Punch Man or Jojo is because I was so put off by the animation that despite the plot being fantastic, I never felt the urge to continue watching the show.

Furthermore, in Shoujo, romance anime, I feel like animation quality is even more important because, like real life romcoms, the characters need to be attractive and someone the viewers themselves would want to date.

With One Punch Man it's probably the art style? since the animation especially in fighting scenes is usually hyped up a bit (Saitama vs Genos scene being probably one of most watched fight scenes), in first season at least ^^
