For media to have a pretense of not being biased, even when most know they aren’t (present day has a lot of that)? Or would you prefer for media to openly acknowledge its bias even if that makes it more extreme? An example of that is the early years of the US. At that time, newspapers were made to cater to political parties, and many prominent early American politicians anonymously published very nasty articles about each other (some examples were Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison, Benjamin Franklins grandson, ect).

Both sides have good and bad. If media is honest about its bias it becomes harder to pass it off as truly objective. But if there’s no expectation of objectiveness, you’ll probably never be able to find anything close at all.

acknowledging the bias, anything else is complete bull. and totally dishonest.
If they are going to shill for a viewpoint/candidate/party/wing of a party then admit it, every single broadcast/printing /taping

The clueless will still drink it up as gospel but at least there would be an opportunity for someone who cares to learn.

Heck force a disclaimer at teh start and after ever add break. on all shows not just 'so called news'

wee make more lawyers rich...

But at least nowadays top politicians don’t write anonymous articles about how the opposite side is a hermaphrodite or trying to make the us a monarchy by planning to marry their kid to the king of France :lisalaugh: And from Franklin’s grandsons example, it seemed that even with the biases being clear, even educated people could become very radicalized via media. An in between would be nice, one where the media still needs to try at least a bit to be objective while still making bias clear, but if you need to announce your bias anyway then why not just go full send into propaganda?

i think its been propaganda for at least 6 decades maybe forever, I am unconvinced that we have ever had truth. Even back in school they taught them to determine 'newsworthy ness' ie the news providers would choose what they thought was relevant. Never forget these are all for profit businesses or even worse government funded. I trust sports scores and that is about it from any source.

The spin is just over the top now.

I love how ppl hate corporations yet almost every bit of corporate media is taken at face value, to reenforce one's personal narrative.

i do remember to both our points Addams said Jefferson was coming into the home for the bibles. thus we get the separation letter which ppl continue to misconstrued. ie the government cant choose a denomination aka create teh church of America like the CoE

when you're in poland you don't get that choice i fear :wimwim: there's media which aren't hiding their bias but their audience fully supports that because they think it's the right thing to do even though that media outlet just straight up lies to them like 99% of the time. and there's media which pretends to be fully unbiased even when they're not (despite not being even close to the extreme bias of the first example) which often gets shit on by the audience of the first example for... being too biased. so in this wonderful country we get the worst of both worlds :facefanning:

True objectivity would be hard to get even if we tried really hard because everyone has biases, whether they realize it or not. And it definitely never existed as being fully objective, media generally started as a mouthpiece for governments. But there is still a difference between now and then. If the same types of articles were written now they’d be considered extremists and never be viewed as reputable among any except other extremists and radical. The state of media in the US now is really not great either, I agree with that, and it definitely feels like it’s getting worse. But I think it’s hard to deny that as bad as it is, it’s still more objective than pre invention of wire or such, out of necessity. And I can’t really think of any prominent figures who died as a result of media wars any time recently, though maybe there was someone. But if current media continues along its trend I wouldn’t be surprised if the end result is similar to early US.

Im a bit confused about the last part. Are you talking about the letter Jefferson sent talking about a wall of separation between church and state?

media is a business first and foremost and therefore as a business it needs to make profit and grow and have business interests

some of those things are incompatible with trying to be impartial since as a business you cater to what your customer's want and thus from a business perspective it's better to try to remain impartial even if one is not

That’s part of the reason media started to at least feign neutrality. Back when media was mostly just local, they didn’t bother trying to not be biased because the communities around them tended to lean heavily the same way (still do to an extent). But once it became feasible to make media not just for your local area, but also different people in different places with different views, they started to try to appear unbiased because that way they could potentially sell stuff to both sides. Though I feel like in that way the media is kind of regressing :haylul:

lots of people get into things with good intentions but as harvey dent says "you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villian"

it's also because the very nature of business implies more and more ---> if you can't continually grow "orgnically" then you have to do it through mergers and acquisitions which means buying out other regional players to form bigger national entities and even international ones and in business there's always competition so if you aren't buying out or merging with someone you're destroying them!!!
