A question about Korean beauty standards and Loona. (1 Viewer)

Please don't hate me for this! I'm just a teenage fan of Loona. I'm also Asian (but not Korean) and I am not calling any of the members ugly by any means.

It's just that I've heard that fans in SK rave about Heejin, and that she is considered the prettiest there. Of course, she's beautiful (all of the Loona members are beautiful), but I was just wondering why. This is a matter of me being curious about the beauty standards of certain locations.

^ This is Heejin, in case you didn't know. I actually thought Hyunjin (below) would be considered the prettiest in SK based on what I know about Korean beauty standards.

Heejin and Hyunjin both have creased eyelids, but Hyunjin's features are more delicate (especially in proportion to her face shape) and her lips are full (Heejin's are thin). Being a brown Asian myself, I love wide noses. Although I have full lips as well, I think all women are beautiful in our own ways even with thin lips. But this is just me being really unbearably curious as to what makes Heejin stands out in SK, generally. (Of course, Koreans are an ethnic group of millions of people and not all of them will have the same opinions.)

I really would've thought Hyunjin would be considered the prettiest in SK. She's not even my bias, but as a kid she was featured on a TV show for her "natural beauty," right? Does Heejin's pointy/V-line chin really have that much of an impact on her appeal in SK?

I really dont know much about beauty, but it seems to me like Heejin looks more european somehow? I know a lot of people consider that beautiful in Korea, thats why they bleach their skin and all that type of things. Maybe that has to do with it somehow.

Her eyes are large, and she has a very innocent looking face. She has an ideal body type, and she looks fragile (in a positive way), which is what Koreans like.

My bias in Loona is Jinsoul and I find her the most attractive, but yeah, I think Hyunjin is prettier between her and Heejin. I just thought she has the kind of face that'd be considered a knock-out pretty much anywhere. I do presume she's deemed traditionally beautiful in SK too (given that she was featured as a mere kid on a Korean show for her natural beauty), but I also heard that she "did something" to Heejin at one convention (probably an overreaction from fans, this one — Hyunjin and Heejin are very good friends!) and a lot of people began hating her for that. That's how much they admire and are protective of Heejin.


I think Hyunjin is incredibly doll-like, too. The first time I saw her, it was actually quite an unflattering picture, so I didn't think much of her. But then I saw her other pictures and... there's just something about her! Her features are so freaking delicate and pretty, but she kind of looks like a blend of so many other people (like Tzuyu, I hear Tzuyu a lot), and maybe conceptually, on paper, she'd look generic... but no, she just has this special quality to her face. Hyunjin looks shiny. I don't know how else to explain it. Her eyes look extra sparkly. Her beauty is the dazzling type, IMO.

But, yes Heejin looks like a more youthful archetype and that is definitely what the Japanese would prefer in their beauty standards, or at least what they would let be publicly known. I would imagine Koreans would be along the same line despite the animosity between the two countries.

2JIN in general are extreamly beautiful but I think there is just this one edge that Heejin got over Hyunjin that makes Heejin more ideal for Koreans

I'm not really expert since i rarely understand Korea's visuals, but when i saw the pics I actually thought that Heejin reminded me of Wonyoung from IZONE and Hyunjin Tzuyu from Twice. Like it's not total match of features, but the athmosphere maybe from those pics at least. Both are quite popular visuals in Korea, I mean Wonyoung even won Produce. But I'm thinking that the cute innocent and youthful athmosphere of Heejin and Wonyoung might be more "in" in Korea right now? It's maybe more of girl next door feel that they like. When Hyunjin and Tzuyu might give bit more reserved and thus hard-to-approach feel?

Heejin gives me IU vibes.

I understand now, thank you. I did see that Hyunjin's character in the Loona videos is the really shy one, while Heejin seemed to be a more normal girl-next-door (who even had a boyfriend that Hyunjin's character had a crush on in the "Around You" MVs). It's weird to think someone's appeal would be diminished by their introversion, though.... I've seen it in my own home country, too, however. I've seen people be annoyed with TV show leading ladies for "not standing up for themselves." Having a backbone while still being soft and approachable is a winning combination for audiences, it seems.

I doubt that anyone in Loona is considered ugly anywhere (I haven't seen anything close to the bashing against, say, poor Jooe from Momoland concerning their looks)... but I have to say I was surprised to hear that Haseul is deemed by herself and Koreans in general as an unconventional beauty. She looks like a very conventionally pretty person to me, and I'm sure people in my country would say the same. From what I've observed, she would be considered really conventionally pretty in a place like America, too.

Again, no one in Loona is widely thought of as ugly. I've seen Korean netizens rave over Jinsoul's prettiness, too. But I do think my bias is best for an international market.

Her face is amazing, her body is amazing, her voice is amazing. Some Orbits seem to have a weird grudge against her or are intense about their own biases (like Lip) so they put Jinsoul down (implying that beauty is her sole asset despite the fullness of her voice that most of the other members lack). Even without my own bias, I've noticed she's the one whom casual international fans find striking most often. I don't think she passes for white at all, but I can see why she was put in the sub-unit designed to appeal to Western markets (and to a lesser extent, other regions in general).
