I felt like doing a list. Including title tracks only, or digital singles, basically anything with a MV. The only criteria is how often I listen to these on my Spotify.
Honorable mentions: Ateez- Hala Hala, BTS- Boy with Luv, NCT Dream- Boom, Oneus- Valkyrie.
10. NCT 127- Superhuman
As a whole, I've really liked NCT's music this year. It feels like they've somewhat calmed down after the crazy experimentation seen last year, and the sound currently is a lot more mainstream sounding. Sometimes, that isn't a bad thing. NCT Dream's Boom was fantastic too.
9. SF9- RPM
Oh look, a beat drop driven chorus but on Senpai's list?
This is one of the few songs that gets it right imo. The beat drop is great, but what makes it better is the vocal post-chorus following it. Plus, the MV aesthetics are amazing.
8. Stray Kids- Miroh
When this first dropped, I felt this intense surge of adrenaline that made me wanna go on a drunken rampage and pick a fight with somebody. What a beast of a hype song
While after several relistens, it's dropped down a few spots, Miroh is still a guaranteed good time.
7. N. Flying- Rooftop
N. Flying's breakout hit released super early this year, but halfway down the 10th month of the year, it still slaps. It's pretty chill compared to most other songs on this list, and has one of the catchiest hooks in Kpop this year, and it does all that without lazily latching onto any overused trends in the industry currently.
6. WayV- Take Off
Kind of cheating to put a Chinese song here, but anyway, another NCT unit in 2019, another great song. Debuting with just a Chinese version of Regular was kinda underwhelming but this song really brought me around on the WayV train. The choreo, vocals, MV, everything is on point. Stan Xiaojun pls, thanks.
5. A.C.E- Under Cover
This was my introduction to A.C.E (well I'd already seen Cactus but this was the first time I sought out an MV to watch) and as far as first impressions go, I couldn't ask for anything better. I guess I'm just a sucker for hype or fun BG songs and this was right up my alley, that rock sound and the combination of aggressive rap verses with some amazing vocal work, and that breakneck choreo had me sold instantly. Anticipating their comeback
4. IZ- Eden
As someone who mostly listens to Western rock when not listening to Kpop, most of K-rock hasn't impressed me. There's always a first time, and for me it was IZ. The guitar riffs had me hooked and that anthemic chorus just drove it further home. A 10/10 song.
3. Oneus- Lit
Know what we also need more of? Fun boy group songs- that whole emo, dark vibe is overdone as hell and mostly results in mediocre outputs. Oneus has balls of steel to go with something like this for their second comeback instead of doing what mostly everyone else is and playing it safe. This is just a super fun song, the members look and sound like they're having fun, the verses and raps are amazing, the musical arrangement is a winning combination. Oneus is probably my fav rookie BG this year. Valkyrie would be an honorable mention on my list too, so they're doing everything right in my book.
2. SuperM- Jopping
SM's mediaplay and desperation aside, and despite the cringe lyrics, Jopping has been on my playlist non stop and it's not likely to stop anytime soon. It's grand, it's epic, it's powerful and it's catchy. Regardless of how SuperM ends up doing, I'm here for the Avengers of Kpop.
1. KNK- Sunset
That bassline throughout the song
The hook and spoken line chorus is so haunting, it made it's home on top of my mind and playlist in no time. Sunset imo balances EDM, techno, synths, all in the perfect proportions without going overboard into any territory which would've made me dislike it. It's a fine line to walk, and KNK does it amazingly well.
On a sidenote, check out their amazing B-side Fade.
